Pocket watch & more

Well-known member
Found this pocketwatch or very large locket two weeks ago and was hoping it would clean up a lot better after the olive oil bath for the pics. There is still rust on stem and hinge,so I'm not just yet able to open and see inside for a possible picture or details. Buckles,' 56 Rosey, were all tid 38-39. Western & H cartridges were tid 35. Flasher lure looks like an older version of a Hopkins (guess I can claim that I was literally "dirt fishing" on this hunt). Decided to hunt in relic and go very slow. Stats /Relic/low density/auto sensitivity. Any suggestions on other methods to clean the watch are welcome. Thanks for looking

Nice hunting there....

Glad to finally see that watch very nice!

You might try some hot peroxide water, take some peroxide in a small bowl and heat it in the microwave. Then soak the watch in it, but do it in one to two minutes intervals at a time and rinse it with water.

Sweet find Ken, be sure to update us if or when you get it open; I know you are curious too.

Guys, much appreciated. Bill, thanks for the peroxide suggestion. Had remembered seeing something about it before, but hadn't researched it.
Rustydigger- weather should be cooperating this weekend. Maybe, we can get a hunt in.

Sweet finds Ken! Was that beach hunting? Whatever it was keep doing it!!!

Thanks, Bunky. No, I was near my daughter's old high school. Pocket watch was just 6-7 inches deep. Though I live near the beach,I rarely hunt it, I prefer the older fields, and neighborhoods where old silver and relics may be hiding. If I have limited time and just need to get out, yeah,I'll try for jewelry down near the surf.

I'm with you Ken, I prefer to relic hunt myself. Rarely do I go to the beach here in St. Pete. Been hitting a home from the late 1800's up here in Ga. near our cabin. The soil is the worst I have encountered so far. The only time I hear the threshold is when I stop swinging the coil. Have found zero old coins at this location. Not even a wheat cent. Did manage a 67 Kennedy Half. That signal bounced around horribly but it sounded good so I dug. Turned out a quarter was in the hole with it. Just can't seem to go deep in this yard at all.
Keep diggin!
