Pondering what to do...

Pete in MI

New member
was in need of some money so took some jewelry in and got some cash. I was torn about parting with the items. I know that if I cannot get rid of something I don't own it - it owns me.

The need for the cash outweighed keeping the items yet I still wanted to keep them. Even felt bad with cash in hand that I sold these items.

I am questioning if I shouldn't just sell my detectors if I am that possessive of something I found. Thinking maybe I should sell the detectors and give whatever money I get for them to the church and spend my time in the Word instead of going out trying to find something else to covet....can one covet something he already has even if it isn't really his?

The items I sold were the class rings I had found. Still haven't found the owner of the one and now no reason to since it will be melted down and the other is the class ring with the fantastic blue stone that was see thru.

I'm torn on what to do. Should I feel bad or is Satan rattling my cage or is it the Holy Spirit convicting me of holding on to something I need to let go of????

Think of it this way Pete. When you are out detecting and finding stuff - don't you often find yourself talking to the lord during that time? I think many of us detectorists do this - sometimes without even thinking about it. What better thing would the Devil want to take you away from than time you spend talking with God?

I want to also share something I got via e-mail from my cousin a few days ago. I just put it into my from cousin Mike folder not thinking much about it till now. So - here it is:

"One is no fool who gives what they cannot keep to gain what they cannot lose"

especially those times when He shows me some of His smallest creatures like the Praying Mantis or Dragon Fly...to the large ones like the Whitetailed Deer that came within a few yards of me or when I see the mighty and majestic Eagle...or when I find a religious item...all are reminders He is wonderful.

Ya did what was needed! Don't let the devil get a foothold! He wants you to feel bad. Give God the glory and be thankful he allowed you to find it so you could sell it in time of need! Don't sell the machine! :)

before you do any thing, wait on the Lord. if it is his will than he will confirm it. take lesson from the early Jewish church they thought Jesus was coming back very soon and sold all of their possessions. will he did not come back as they thought. so the early church was left the burden of supporting these people and even Paul went out though Asia minor collecting donations for them. then came to a point where Paul said if a man doesn't work he shouldn't eat. this all happened because they acted without seeking out the will of God, and acting on their own convictions. God said my sheep know my voice and none other will they follow. so we cannot follow until we first hear. faith is only faith when it is based off a promise, blind faith is dangerous, because it can cause you to get outside the will of God and cause you to suffer unnecessarily. the early church is an example of this. i know the church uses Abraham to support blind faith but read in the chapter before and Abram was headed to Canaan with his father, then had to stop off in Haran because Tera was dying. Abraham knew were he was going but had never been there, that why it said to a land he did not know. when you are going through things in your life and don't have the answers, and believe God to deliver you, that is not blind faith, that is standing on the covenant that God made with you, based off a promise. God through the whole bible has made his will know before hand, then expected the people to believe, not in reverse. live your life as you are lead and not off the convictions of others. didn't mean to get so long winded, but i think the metal detecting can be a great opportunity to be a witness. change the way those things affect you and redirect your heart. change comes from the inside and the outside takes care of itself.
GOD BLESS.

Appreciate the info..you told me some things I did not know so being 'long winded' is a blessing to me.

Just don't want material things - like the rings - keeping me from being in right standing with God. I know God doesn't have a problem with me having the detectors and being able to witness because I can via MDing. Juat don't like the 'torn' feeling I had over this.

God is not a God of confusion.

to owe anyone but in today's world it is very difficult to not be in debt. When money is needed to pay a debt or bill and you sell what you have found detecting, then just let them go and use the money. I don't like to get rid of or sell any of my finds either and it isn't because I covet them, it's because I like to look at what I found and give God the praise and the glory! If and when I do need to sell or give someone pleasure with some of them then I will still give God the Praise for allowing me to find them and Thank, Jesus, for His blessings upon me and upon others whom the treasures will bless or help them by paying on the debts or bills that I owe.

Just thank God and Jesus for the time that you had them and go detecting when you are able and talk to God and thank Him for all the animals, His beautiful creations of nature all around us! The warm weather and fresh air will do you and Sherry good to get out and enjoy each other and bask in the warmth of God's love! :inlove:

If you need money and still cannot give them up to meet your needs....then you might be coveting them.....but I don't think so, it's because we know Who helped us in finding them and we don't want to turn loose of what He has given us for pleasure and enjoyment! I truly enjoyed treasure hunting when I could, but my detecting days are about over due to my health and arthritis in me bones with achy muscles!

Tell ole slew foot, satan, to go and leave you alone! He just wants you to feel bad, because you love God and Jesus so much! He will accuse anyone whether they are guilty or not! So, start praising God and thanking Him in prayer, praise and song!

Hope this helps!
Betty

Dear Brother Pete, I am a man who speaks my mind. I use scripture as my plumb line and the Holy Spirit as my quide for understanding. The Lord promised us a "Comforter" in John 16:7, and He indeed did send Him. You said you "were in need of some money", looks like you were blessed with some although a bit difficult to let go of some of your finds. Seems to me your detector helped in a time of need and just may help again! Don't let the hobby become your God and you will be okay. Rather let it be your friend, a time to talk with the Lord, and a time to talk to others ABOUT the Lord! We all need to be in the Word as much as we can. Reason being is that we all need to put on the whole armour of God, (Ephesians 6:11). Satan's greatest tool is deception, he will appear as an "angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14), other wise he wouldn't be able to trick us. Another tool is for Satan to keep us occupied so we aren't serving the Lord. Think about Peter for a moment, the Lord called him to be a disciple. He was a common man, not rich or pompous, but apparently just a poor fisherman! But oh how the Lord loved him! Even after Peter denied the Lord three times when Judas betrayed the Lord in the garden. The Lord knew Peter would deny Him before hand and told Peter so, well we know that Peter did as it is written. Then our Lord was crucified and what did He do when He rose again three days later? One thing He did was went right back to that poor fisherman who wasn't arrayed in silk robes or fancy hats (actually he was naked!), but he found Peter fishing again! It seems Peter liked to fish, after all, he made it an all nighter, (John 21:3-4), but it was also a way to make ends meet. Look at what the Lord says to them! , "And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes." (John 21:6). Jesus didn't rebuke him for going back to fishing. The Lord used fishing as an example, Matthew 4:19 and Mark 1:17, "...fishers of men." We have a good clean hobby here that we enjoy, share, and at times use to provide some of our needs (or the needs of others), and we encourage children to get involved which is a HUGE blessing if we can get those younger ones away from all the trash on TV and video games. A lot of us pick up trash and broken glass out of public areas where children or even others could get hurt. Many a detectorist has returned a wedding ring or other lost item to a grateful owner who was blessed by our hobby! In fact, I cannot think of a better hobby that offers so many benefits to both the hobbiest and others! Fresh air, exercise, cleaned parks, yards, and beaches, rewards, quiet time with God and His creation, and much more! Use this hobby for the Lord and enjoy it, but be balanced, be in the Word as much as you can so that when you cross the path of others you are well equipped to share the Joy of the Lord! Below I would like to share on just a few more things.
Not to long ago I too acquired a Class ring (not from detecting), a very heavy college ring with initials and date. I tried hard to find the the owner to no avail. I even joined Classmates.com, still could not find the owner. I was also in need and sold that ring. It was a blessing and I thanked the Lord for it!
Okay, now if I may I would like to share about some of the "religous" finds. Many a Christian has referred to images as "Jesus", even myself when I was younger in the Lord. A few things to consider and I will start with the most serious. For those of you who are older or maybe a bit more learned you may remember a minister from the 1950's named Martin Dehaan. He was well learned in the scriptures and I believe said it best, "God has created us in His image, let us not create Him in ours!". I believe it is not only dangerous to call or refer to manmade objects as Jesus, but it is also blasphemy. Two points, Jesus did not have long hair as is evident in scripture, and it was considered a disgrace for ANY man to have long hair. Paul would never have instructed the Corinthian church that it is a shame (vile, disgrace, dishonor), for a man to have long hair if Jesus did as he taught in 1 Corinthians 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? Keep in mind that some of the Corinthians probably saw Christ in person and Paul wrote approx. 2/3 of the New Testament! There are no paintings of Christ from His time, we simply do not know what He looked like and I believe that was and is His will. Paintings of a "Jesus" didn't appear until hundreds of years later, and certainly not by any artist who saw Him! An interesting note though is that in around 300 AD there was found a small carved Ivory box of the disciples, some had beards, but no long hair! God has forbidden images as read in the, "Ten Commandments". One thing we can all count on, God doesn't change, thank goodness! We should never refer to a manmade object of any kind as God as God cannot be made, He is the potter we are the clay! I pray that He molds each of us that want to detect into a vessel for His glory so that many more will come to know Him and praise His holy name! Amen??? Please, take not my word for it, search the scriptures and see if these things are not so!, for I am just a man as you are! May God bless each of you.

God bless! :)

each culture has seemed to mold Jesus as they perceive him, just as we do with anything else, including the Bible. Jesus was a Jew by birth and looked like a Jew. Jews at that time were short, dark complected, and had dark brown eyes most likely. his face was most likely rounded not elongated. is this all important how he looked, yes and no. no meaning has no bearing on your relationship with him. yes meaning go's to show you how man can distort everything he comes into contact with. at the time of Jesus and the disciples we were given a pure religion, but after that man has been busy changing it to make it a workable religion. meaning one that will fit his needs and desires.

God's Word is always preffered over the just my humble opinion replies. I am in a study course now and this very topic came up and God's Word answered the question for me. Your reply confirms what I had read today as well. Actually, God's Word being confirmed by His Word from another source.

Thank you very much for your reply. Welcome to the forum an stick around. You have lots to share about our Lord and your finds too and I welcome you Brother.

Blessings to you and yours

Pete

If I don't have Jesus..it doesn't matter what I have...all is lost. Thank God I have Jesus. If I were to put anything before God, then I am worshipping idols. There is but one God...Creator of all things good.

Thank you all for your thoughts and especially the scriptures for they are the guideposts I need to follow - not my feelings, wants and desires of the flesh.

Thank you all and God bless each and everyone, in Jesus name. Amen.

I love the Lord, I learned that He is the only one I can truly trust. As I have grown in the Lord I have learned to set aside my trust in the traditions of men and use the Word for understanding as I pray for God's will through His Spirit to lead and bless me. I study a lot, (2 Timothy 2:15), but also realize it would be shame to keep inside what the Lord has opened my eyes to. I try to encourage everyone to search the Scriptures themselves as the Bereans did, (Acts 17:11), to see if these things be so! When Paul encouraged Timothy to study, he said, "...approved unto God..., and, rightly dividing the word of truth." Not unto men, and not the traditions of men. God is good and gracious, He loves us, He taught us to love, and I believe He can use us to reach others in all that we do. Today, I hope and pray that each of us that go out to detect will share a smile, a kind word, or a invitation to know Christ, to anyone the Lords allows to cross our path as we enjoy our hobby. For those that can't go out, I pray that you will pray for us that do! I read many posts here. I told my wife about this Lady named "Betty" here on this forum. She said to me she wished there was a way for us or someone to help Betty get out and do a little detecting or maybe just invite her along on picnic when it warms up while we detect. I bet she can share with our grandchildren a few tips about detecting! Betty, I am sorry we live so far apart from each other! Enjoy your posts!

and this is for anyone who has a hobby. Is the hobby taking away time that you could be spending doing God's work? NOW sit back and relax and really meditate on that question....Let it permeate through your spirit.

Everyone has hobbies.... I like fishing, hunting, mding, and fiddling with my yard. BUT if it is taking time away from what God has laid on your heart as your gift (and we all have at least one spiritual gift) then just cut back and do what God's laid on your heart.

BUT.........
God has blessed you with the ability to metal detect. You're mobile and have a way to go and you have a detector (THANK HIM FOR THAT). As detectorist we come across so many people asking stupid questions about everything. Actually people metal detecting probably talk to more strangers than a lot of other everyday people. Stick some tracks in your pocket and hand a few out while detecting. Nothing says (except the father of lies) that we can't spread the gospel as we do our own thing. Cease the opportunity to spread the Gospel and tell a very, very sick world about our Jesus. HEY maybe thats one of your spiritual GIFTS!

Here's some more things to do as we "do our own thing", I call breath prayers..... If I see someone walking along I pray for their salvation, thinking about someone on a prayer list - I pray for them, lots of times I pray for myself. Breath prayers are really effective ways to keep a focus on God while we are mding. If talking to someone ask if you can pray for them. Take a new verse of scripture the night before and memorize it. Keep saying it while you're detecting. Write a sermon in your head. Think about what you would tell others if you were in the pulpit the next Sunday. Donate your finds to a local church or homeless shelter. Create your own ministry within.

I hope this helps...
And because this is bothering you, you probably don't need any advice.
God Bless you and your ministry!
Pappy

thank you so much for yours and your wife's kind words! I did belong to a Metal-Detecting Club and have made many friends by attending the meetings and going on hunts! But it has come to the point that I couldn't afford the dues any longer and also I am unable to be outdoors for very long when it is very cold or very hot weather. It affects my breathing (COPD) and I have a bad leg, so cannot walk on it a lot, as it gets inflamed and hurts! I have flibites.....and could have blod clots, so I keep it bandaged most of the time! I used to detect a lot and still went to work, church and wrote poetry for my Lord through the inspiration of His Holy Spirit!

The ones I used to go detecting with have either died or like me have gotten older with poor health!

I would like to go detecting with all of my Brothers and Sisters on this forum....but travelling long trips is too difficult for me and also financially too expensive! I truly would like to go to the CMD Forum hunt, but just cannot do so! Mike, the one who has the hunt each year, I sure would like to meet and those who can make it to Michigan! Just too far for me! He has even offered to help me with my home and yard, but too far for him to drive that distance, too! But bless his heart, Jim's...who said he would like to help me also but lives in PA and yours....(don't know where you are from) for making me feel good and making my life much better! I have neighbors who have helped me when I needed some help!! God is so goooood!!

He knew I needed encouragement to continue posting my thoughts and desires, so I can encourage others as best I can through the Lord's leading!

Love ya all in Christ Jesus' love!!

God Bless & Happy Detecting to all and I'll be praying for your safety and witnessing to others while detecting for the elusive treasure!

Betty
