Possible problem with the E-Trac

Southwind

Well-known member
Just got another E-Trac yesterday and while testing it in my yard I noticed that in pinpoint mode the depth meter goes all the way to the bottom and stays there. It works fine in motion mode. I seem to remember my other E-Trac would show a depth reading even in pinpoint mode.

I think your right. Pinpoint should keep up with depth too...at least mine does.

Once in a while mine will peg the bottom while in the pinpoint mode. I always start over and recheck this. If It does it again I sweep around and see (feel) how big the item is. You can do this by moveing the coil over the target and if it hits a small object you will see how fast the sound peaks and ends while a large object will circle some 4-?inches away and still be peaked out with sound.
If you are sure it is not a big burried item and you test this with a small coin elsewhere then I would say your pinpoint is foulded up for some reason. Easy enough to check just put down a penny in a clean area and test your depth readout.

good luck

It does it even with the coil in the air. As soon as I hit pinpoint the depth meter drops to the bottom and stays.

Not such a big deal as long as it works in motion mode. Thats what I use the most anyway.

OK update to my problem. I have no problem. I took it to the park today for a test and depth was fine even in pinpoint. I guess what I never noticed before was that when you first go into pinpoint mode the depth meter go to the bottom UNTIL it gets a signal. Not sure why it was reading my test garden coin as 12" deep, but it seems to be fine. DUH!

The Normal pinpoint mode in effect detunes each time you pass the coil over the target, thereby reducing signal strength which could show an erroneous depth. Try using Sizing or other Pinpoint mode,.

Mine does this also sometimes, but in non-pinpoint mode it shows the real depth. If I move the coil around a bit and come back to the original signal and do the pinpoint again it usually gives the correct depth. It only seems to happen when the signal is very close to the surface though.
