Prizm IV users....your opinions appreciated please

A friend of mine is thinking about the Prizm IV, even though I have suggested the Ace 250.
I looked at the Specs at Whites Website and it really doesn't look like a bad machine
even though it does seem a bit too much$$$$$ for what you get.

It does have an 8 inch coil and three tone ID

Any comments?????

hey robert.ive got one and beem using it for acouple yrs.i got coil that came with and has three tone.i found alot neat stuff with me.ive finding alot good old cions past couple weeks.it goes 8 in. deep and i found alot stuff really deep.if i got a real soft beep i'll use the p/p until i "x" the mark and start digging and i usally find something.its a great stater machine and ive been real happy with it.

I bought a Prizm IV for my 1st detector after being out of metal detecting for 20 years. It was a great turn-on-and-go detector and I was able to log many nice finds with it in two years. I eventually migrated over to the MXT and use it exclusively now, but I still have my Prizm IV in ready reserve in case the MXT has to go to the shop. I would recommend the Prizm IV as a good detector to start out with...easy to use, lightweight, good depth, 3 tones...a lot of quality features in a relatively low cost machine.

Thanks. I've been trying to steer this friend of mine over to the ACe but apparently he has an offer from someone who wants to get rid of their Prizm.
Personally, and I think most people feel the same way, for the money one is better off with the Ace but he's got his mind set.

Personally I think your friend is making a good choice. The Ace is a good machine and I have the 150 and the 250 which when I go to club hunts I bring for kids to use that would like to try detecting. I also have the prizm 2 and 5 and in my opinion the 2 is a better machine than the 250. My first coin machine was the 5 and in the first year of use found enough clad at the local parks to purchase the Mxt and a bigfoot coil.
 
A friend of mine has a 250 and I bought my daughter a Prizm 1V. I have tried both and prefer the Prizm by a long shot. I use an XLT but will try the Prizm sometimes for something different and have made some good finds with it. My daughter found an 1824 large cent with it. I would recommend the Prizm to anyone starting out for its ease of use, pin point mode, and tones. Silver sure sounds good with tones. The Prizm also has depth readings which help alot. Just my 2 cents worth
 
I have an ACE 250 Robert. I have had it about 3 weeks and I frankly don't like it. I can't get used to the silent search mode and I have had a whites Classic 1 for several years and a MXT for 4 years. I just love the MXT and now have gone back to it. The ACE 250 is for sale and includes the sniper coil. Its been used 4 times and is in new pristine condition and works fine. I have a total of $273.80 invested and would take $200.00 firm for it.
 
I need to add something to the above ACE 250 forsale. I wil ship in the original shipping box. It comes with the manual, the DVD ACE 250 instructional Video. The Garrett Warrenty card is included so all you need to do is fill it out and send it in. The shipping to me wa $9.95 by DHL and you would need to include this in the price. I would try to ship DHL but if its UPS or whatever I will try to stay in the bounds of that price.
 
I, an ace250 owner myself, think it's a great machine and that notch can't be beat. It's a real good buy. But.......
I was never too impressed with the depth of it. But that may be only because of the ground conditions in my neck of the woods.
My M6 kinda reminds me of the Ace250. Only with a lot more depth.
 
I don't have an Ace 250, but have read a lot about them. I get the impression that they work quite well, but are not the deepest. That said, they are probably well placed among the top 2 or 3 when "bang for the buck" is considered as well as being just plain being fun detectors.

AFter having read so many opinions and reading the "specs" at the Whites website, I can see that the
Prizm II is really a high priced almost useless machine. Its a nice little machine for a kid but the cost is
not very reasonable when you consider whats already out there. The Prizm III is only a little better but
not a winner.Whites needs to knock down the price. One would be better off starting at the Prizm IV level
where you can at least "notch out" and customize your search to suite your interest. So what if it has only
5 range discrimmination. I'm sure many people can live with that. The 8 inch coil is a plus.

Over all I'd say the Prizms are probably decent but really over priced for whats out there. They are darned heavy as well.
Some of us like the TONE as opposed to the BELL tone. Just my opinion.

Smart Notch. You choose ... detect or ignore them. Just push a pad and nails, foil, and tabs are in or out. The "Smart" system notches each zone based on your discrimination setting. You'll wonder how you ever did without Smart Notch!

Tone I.D. 3 distinctly different audio tones instantly cue you to the target's desirability. LOW signals nails and iron. MEDIUM is rings and jewelry. HIGH indicates coins.

Depth Reading as you hunt. Once you've detected a good target, the screen shows you how deep to dig. No extra steps, it's automatically on the screen! Target I.D. Display shows I.D. of target as you hunt. Hear and see targets!

5-Range Discrimination adjusts so you pick what you want to see and hear. Hear and see it all, or just the good stuff.

Adjustable Sensitivity maximizes detection depth in varying grounds.

PinPoint/All-Metal Mode makes locating your target a snap. Just push the pad!

8-inch waterproof search coil.

I recently picked up a like new Prizm IV off Ebay. Won't be able to give it a good try until the snow melts and the ground dries a bit. However, in air testing here at home, it gives decent performance and I like the features. The target ID is very accurate in the air test. I do agree that compared to the competition, that White's has made them pretty pricey. I don't see where you come up with them being darned heavy though as it's just a tad heavier than my Tesoros and a true light weight compared to my MXT, which I consider to be WAY heavy for a detector. Will report more when I can get out and give it a real world shake down.

Heavy...I was thinking of my MXT. I have never held the Prizm in my hand. Just a deduction that is apparently wrong:)-):drinking:

My mistake. My MXT is heavy 4.3 pounds with batteires.
Prizms come it at 2.5.
 
No problem RR. If we all got it right all the time it would be a boring world. I managed to get out to a snow free, but saturated area in the yard with the Prizm since I posted earlier and it seems to work pretty well. I think for typical park and bark lot hunting it will be more than adequate, as is the Ace, Compadre and a slew of others. I think it's a neat little machine, but agree with you that 1: White's made it a bit pricey and 2: This is the level the Prizms should have started at. AND I personally feel that Whites should have included several coil options, espcially a small "shooter" coil for the heavy trash areas.

i agree barberbill ive been hunting eveer week here in wv when the snow melts and finding some of the oldest coins ever.it would be nice have a different coil for trashing areas.

Does the tone sound anything like the MXT when zeroing in on a target?
The thing I really don't like about the Ace 250 is the Dang Bell Tone. With my
MXT I can hear faint tones but not with the Ace. If there's the possibility of a deep
target the Ace is not going to tell me.

It is true that the 250's tone is the same on deep or shallow targets. The Prizm's has a modulated tone. But the 250 will detect just as deep as the Prizm. They just react to targets differently. I have tested the Prizm's and Ace 250 side by side in air tests and in the ground. They both will pick up a silver dime at about 8 to 9 inches in the air. The difference is the Prizm will have a softer,lower tone beep and the 250 will bang the beep out on the same deep target. But in the pinpoint mode you can tell the depth on both models. So by using your ears on the intensity of the pinpoint tones you can get just as close as a depth gauge. Really if the Prizms would be able to accept or reject any or all target zones with a big price drop then they would be a much better unit.
