PRO COIL?

Hi Dan ,
Apparently there is a big difference . I've seen a few Slimlines for sale and cheap but not any pro coils.I'd still try out the Slimline first if I were you , it may just do the trick for you .I have an SE but I use the stock 10,5 coil from my EX2 on it because I like the way it slides on turf better .Mostly I use a Sunray X-8 with spacers for lightness and easy sweeps. When I really want to pick thru stuff and not lose much depth I prefer the Explorer 8" the high tones seem to be a little bit crisper than the rest of my coils . I'm sure there are a lot of guys out there still using Slimlines and finding them adequate . I think it is always a good idea to have more than one coil for your machine though , just in case one goes out of wack . Try to go hunting with someone who has the Pro and listen to each others finds with both coils to get an idea if you really want one ,Some guys claim the Pro is so good at separating that they don't use their smaller coils .Some say the Pro gets hung up on stuff (twigs , branches etc. ).The only way I would get the Pro is if I were to get an E-Trac. I am presently very happy with what I have .I would say most detectorists can't tell the differences between penny and dime tones .As far as the headphones go if they are giving you discomfort get something that doesn't and gives good tones . there are a lot of good ones to choose from out there . Good luck with your SE whenyou finally get a chance to use it .

Thanks George

The rain finally quit a few hours ago and I took it for a quick spin in the mud. Notice two things right off the bat. I need to practice some, before digging on someones elses property:thumbdown:, They wouldn't appreciate the large holes I dug to find a nail ;). The second is I am going to have to retrain myself 180 degrees opposite from what took me the longest to learn on the Fisher. I am now not looking for the sharp crisp cut off tones of the 3-d, but the more rounded tones. Am I correct on this? The one really good signal I thought, turned out to be a really rusted large plow share standing straight up at about 12 inches:surprised:. I really love the back light however.

Not the brightest leaf on the tree:confused:

I use variability and limits on 10 and can tell the difference in copper mems., zinc mems, and clad dimes, the deep wheats hit between silver and clad dime on my EXII usually ,in mild soil. I only use the stk 1050 and the minelab 8" coils ,and the audio is the same on both, I'd say.But am thinking about getting the SEF 10x12 double oval coil.
Again, this is not a vlf machine and is really different to learn, or relearn as the case may be.Also on the smart find screen , the dimes and pennies hit in seperate places. The only ones I can't tell by audio is clad qtrs and silver qters. ,they sound and hit the same on my machine, but you can usually tell by depth, but I don't mind because I dig all high right corner hits no matter what... You'll get it . Also I think you might do better with the gain at 7 or 6 for a few hunts, gain above that can get chirpy and that is confusing when trying to learn the sounds. , especially in saturated ground..just my twocents .. man I just lucked out and got a new pro coil for 133.00 shipped!.........now I have three! one on the se( the stock coil is not that great!)....one on the e-trac ...that"s still in the box( I must be crazy..had it two weeks, still in the box)...and the one I just got!....The one on the se cost 210.00 or around there from kellyco....they are not cheap!
I really almost don"t think you need a smaller coil...mine does good in trash....I have the 4*7....had it on once....I have the 5" exe....had it on twice...just to hard to take the pro off....to me it is the best...I have not tried that 10*12....so I don't know about that one...see yah!!!
O yeah...I think the stock exII coil is better than the stock se coil...from what I heard!

Whites to minelab user here. Thinking about buying the pro coil and also the 6" DD..... Was wondering how the 11" coil was as far as depth and the speration of junk?????

LOL, if your asking me, your in trouble big time. I now have about 3 hours on my SE with a slim line coil. I'm still digging nails but they are rusted and deep. I'm sure someone a little more knowledgeable will reply.

Good luck
Dan

get one of the pro coils!....there one on e......... y....they don't come up to often.....you said it was raining ...it is raining in sacramento,ca...stopped for a while...I was out in the mud ....but it was fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had my SE about 10 months now--but I probably averaged at least 12-15 hours a week on it--and I still can't tell the sound difference between some of those if I'm not hearing them next to each other. I suspect some of that sort of thing relates to perfect pitch. i.e., some folks can remember frequencies in their head and others can't. For sounds that read in that tight area in the top right corner of the screen, I tend to rely on the ID if it's shallow. I'll dig anything in the top right corner if it sounds like that and that's deeper than half on the depth meter in most places.

On the coil, I got mine about halfway through and I don't think I knew enough to recognize the difference other than being able to run the sens. higher but, when I thought about it later, I realized I'd only put the Slimline back on when I was trying to test the difference when I first got the Pro. As a default coil, the Pro is definitely better (except for twigs and visually). What the difference is worth is another, more debatable. issue.

Dan,

It is hard for one person to accurately describe a sound to another , I'm not even going to attempt to go there . A friend of mine who is a very experienced hunter and much more successful than I keeps a silver dime in his shoe and runs his coil over it every so often to see if he and his machine are in tune with each other . Forget about the tones of your F-75 or your other machines when using your Explorer it's a whole different ball game . Trust your ears rather than the digital and smartfind , if you think it sounds like silver go for it , you'll be surprised how many times you are right . Don't be afraid to use your noise cancel a little more too . Use the lowest threshold you can also to hear those real faint whispers and if it's real deep and repeatable dig it no matter what it sounds like . Good luck .

It is a bit more expensive, but if you get extra upper and lower shafts for the detector(s) it's just a few minutes to change over from one coil to another. Just leave the coil on the shaft with the connecting wire at the top. Undo the cam lock unscrew the other coil;screw the new one on push the rod end into the machine throw the cam lock and go hunt with a different coil. No messing with detaching the coil and trying to guide the new cable through the internal maze of the rod.
The first few times I went out with the SE I had the stock coil on it. It made so much noise I almost wrapped it around a tree. Got the 8" minelabe and that settled it right down and I started to learn what it was telling me. The Pro coil will do the same. There is a major difference.
Another suggestion...if you have someone near who will mentor you, go to Radio Shack and get a 3' splitter that fits the headphone jack. They are about $8. That way two of you can be plugged into the machine with the headphones simultaneously and you can follow the master and listen and see what he's digging without him losing the assistance the headphones give. I did that for four hours one day and it really helped me. I sort of see like it's a set of training wheels on a bicycle or a buddy-box while learning to fly RC models. Jim

I have had an SE for almost three years now. The learning curve is almost a circle. It took me a long time and a lot of hours to figure out how to get the best results for me. I bought a pro coil in September. The biggest difference I noticed is that the iffy signals are clearer and there seems to be better target separation. I bought the lower shaft with the coil. it makes the changeover a lot easier. I usually operate in ferrous with no discrimination. I like to hear everything and dig most of what I hear. It not only helps me learn but often times I am surprised at what comes out of the ground. Silver does not always read or sound the same. Rosies, mercs, Barbers, Seated and Bust coins all sound sweet but don't read in the same spot the same as Indians, wheats and memorial cents. I like the pro coil and have found more and better coins in some of the same areas I had hunted in the past. Tokens and jewelry are all over also. My mentor has taught me to dig it all. I watched him pull a beautiful silver bracelet out one morning that I took to be a bunch of tin foil. It was in segments and was scattered in the ground on different angles which gave some really weird readings. Take your time and go slo. I hear that a lot from the guys I hunt with.H.H.

Thanks everyone for your help:detecting:. I plan to purchase a Pro coil after Christmas, and planning on continuing with my retraining my ears to my new detector. But I may need your advice on a difficult problem area I have. The best way I can describe the sounds I think I

Sometimes wide open isnt the answer. Im surprised you said you machine was nulling if its wide open. There are options... like auto sensitvity or reduced sensitivity, a little disc (reject nails) or patterns which might allow you to hunt in a little higher sensitivity without nulling as much. Also, a smaller coil is always an option. As far as your sounds go i played with my Th tone variability and limits and could get pretty close to my old detectors sound. You have a very tuff area to hunt, but it may pay off. Ive hunted parks with horrible ground EMI it took a few times and a lot of experimenting before i started finding coins others just gave up on. HH

Thanks, maybe nulling out is the wrong term. Silent might be better. When I went all medal and wide open I couldn't move the detector without a multitude of iron signals. I played a bit with my Explorer and put a gold ring in the middle of a horse shoe and couldn't pick up anything. I am just starting with the Explorer and have a lot to learn. Will try reducing parameters next.

Thanks
Dan

Update :clapping: I just picked out a penny at 6 inches in the edge of my nail field:laugh:. I know its not treasure but a major confidence builder in my new detector:beers:. Even I don't believe how many nails are here and I'm listening to them.:surprised:

Happy detecting
Dan

Dan,

I read on some guys web site about setting out a silver quarter, dime, a wheat penny, buff nickle, jefferson, etc. Go over each coin several times at different heights of the coil and adjust the Variability until you have just the differences you want between the different coins. I set mine up according to his directions and it made a huge difference in my silver finds. Also retraining myself to hunt in ferrous rather than conductive helped on digging rusty nails although I still get fooled every now and then. I went from an EX II to the SE and there is a learing curve with that as well. I learn something about this machine everytime I use it and I have been using the SE for almost two years now. I use the Minelab 8" and the Sunray 5" and get tremendous depth.

Good Luck

Thanks for the advise. I have a test garden that I have coins buried at 5 inches and shallow coins or close to the surface. I also have junk mixed in with some of the surface coins and a large gold nugget ring at 4 inches. The nugget ring is new to the garden and I am watching closely to see if it tries to get away, or sink. It is however in a hard clay bank, not totally, I also have a twenty dollar gold piece and a ten ounce silver bar, but can't work up the nerve to bury them,:heh:. That is the 1st place I go everyday when I go out the door with the detector. So far I like the Explorer and may be implying that I am having a lot difficulty which is not true, just looking for shortcuts in the learning curve. I do have a very difficult place to learn on my own property and I am still digging a lot of really rusted nails and iron that fools me, but not nearly as many as with the Fisher 3-D. I can actually almost feel the Fisher tugging on my arm trying to get to a nail,:chase:. When I get a chance to go somewhere else after playing on my own place, it seems, easier.:detecting:

Thanks everyone for the help.
Dan

PS: The pro coil is on its way.

While I was rereading this post my virus protection said it blocked a Trojan. This will probably be my last post on the forum. Thanks for all of the advise and wish everyone happy hunting. I am going off line! I am cancelling my web provider at the 1st of the month, just really really tried of paying someone only to be spammed and give me viruses LOL. I will go to a child's home and give him a dollar to spit in my face if I miss it.:crylol:

Wish everyone the best of Luck and Happy Holidays
Dan
