My Garrett ProPointer setup works just as well (photo below). You slide the washer forward until it chirps
then slide it back until the chirping just stops. You will now have up to 4" of depth on a quarter.
If you tape a coin or washer in place, it will work fine the first time. However, if you turn the ProPointer off
then turn it back on your sensitivity will be different with possibly less sensitivity, so you must re-tape the
coin in a different position.
The problem is there is a variable in detention depth each time you turn it off and on.

Fantastic seeing both versions
I will take the time to set up and try to use this trick
I believe the Garrett Pro Pointer is the best and making it better is just great

Now if I can dig through this dry hard ground to get to the deep coins......
You know it rained here almost three months but with 90's now that rain did not seem to have ever happened

banditcey,

What part of the country do you live in because it seems so dry in different parts of the USA
which makes it a little harder to find those good targets in the hard ground.
We are lucky here, the temperature in North Idaho has been in the low 70's so far and
the ground is neither dry nor wet.

It feels like Florida
But we live in Amherst NY, which is a large suburb of Buffalo, NY
Our surrounding areas are very historic
There are settlements recorded from the 1600s
Even with the heat and dry soil we have managed to find 18 silvers in the past two weeks
I did have to wear palm padded gloves under my digging gloves because I developed blisters and callouses digging the hard soil
I try not to complain because we have our share of bad weather but there is a reason you go slower in the heat
Keep cool and HH

I'll trade you my 102 degrees today here in central Illinois for your 70's anytime. We had a very cool wet spring and early summer, now it's hot, dry and muggy every day.

I do have one question on your Garrett Pro Pointer setup. Since you are setting the washer so close to setting the Pro Pointer off you must be affecting the battery as it must be sensing the washer. Does this set up shorten your battery life? I have a Pro Pointer and really like it. Just wandering?

tippyhound,
The battery seems to last forever. I haven't noticed any difference in battery life before I installed the washer and afterwards.
I seem to get at least 30-40 hours on a 9 volt battery.
I slide the washer all the way back towards the battery lid opening in normal use (2" or less depth) and when I need the extra sensitivity
then I slide it towards the led light. Why-because the extra sensitivity can be too strong and it's hard to pinpoint the target,
so I adjust the washer position to the target's size and depth.

Thank you for the reply. Your response answered a second question that came to mind about to much sensitivity. Rick IL
