Pro pointer Question???????

Hi all
Was out playing with the pro pointer on Sunday and found what i believe to be an iron ore sample and a few bullets. I can pick it up the sample if i lay it on the blade of the pointer BUT it wont pick it up if i place it against the tip???????????????????? Anyone got any ideas why?

Are you sure it is iron ore? If it is attracted to a strong magnet, it might be, yet not have enough metallic content to overcome the Pro Pointer's threshold.

Alan Applegate

PS: If you were really lucky, you might have found a Pallasite. Hum!

Oh yeah, sounds like iron ore/hot rock to me. The reason why it sounds off on the side and not the tip is simply because there is not enough metalic content to set off the propointer from the tip(which covers a much smaller area then the sides). The sides of the propointer have a wider detection area, therefore it will sound off more readily on mineralization, etc.:wiggle:
Do you have a metal detector with ore calibration or hot rock check like CX Plus or Scorpion? You could easily tell for sure that way. I doubt it's a meteorite because they have a high metalic content and would most likely make the propointer sound off from the tip.
Does the sample make your metal detector sound off in discriminate mode as well as all metal mode? Do you have a Vibraprobe or pulse induction type pinpointer. A hot rock or iron ore would not trigger a signal(pulse/vibration) on this type of pinpointer.
Got any pics? Good luck. Happy Hunting!:)

Hi Metalhead

Will have a play with the scorpion tonight and see what it says, but believe it will be a hot rock. Was just curious about the way it would sound on the pointer.

Will let you know what happens.

Razor. :detecting:

Ok did the test as per the book for the scorpion and believe it is a hot rock. Did it in the back yard, ground balanced first then got a signal in 'all metal' had a nice faint audible sound set and it increased in all metal. Switched to TR disc with discrimination set to zero as per the book and the signal decreased to silent so HOT rock it is. P.S. very strong magnetism when holding magnetite against it.

Will just have to keep looking.
