I was able to speak to a large group of middle school students recently as an assembly on treasure hunting. Usually I do just a grade or a few classes....this time it was an entire 2 town large school! But, the set up was pretty cool. As you can see it was a huge auditorium & they were able to show my "antiques roadshow" video and also a couple episodes from my DVD on the big screen. Then I did a talk, took questions, & had everyone come up for a closer look at all the display cases of artifacts I brought....
It was good to be able to once again share the hobby & promote proper ethical metal detecting.
My next gig is a treasure club in Newton Ma. in 2 weeks....

Well done Bill. Maybe the spark was lit in the mind of a person who in a few years will make the next design break through to help the rest of us find more.

Must have been fun! I watch "antiques road show" all the time, but have never seen the episode you were in. Where can one find this?
 
I brought the 2 slave tags I dug as a boy. I don't think they do re-runs of that episode any longer since it's been several years now. Archaeologial protests (dozens of letters) also did not help any as far as re-running that episode :( They have nothing better to do than attack detectorists I guess.....
I have been waiting for Antiques Roadshow to put their older shows onto DVD. Last time I checked they had yet to do so.....

IF YOUR COMPUTER SOFTWARE FOR VIDEO CAN CAPTURE VIDEO YOU CAN TAKE YOUR AUDIO AND VIDEO AND FEED IT INTO THE COMPUTER VIA THE BACK AND THEN CAPTURE IT. YOU COULD THEN EDIT IT AND SAVE IT AS A FILE AND THEN DOWNLOAD IT TO YOU TUBE. I HAD TO DO THAT FOR A FRIENDS WEDDING.

... I tend to agree with the "Way to Go!" crowd. Ive seen your videos - it's like detecting with a good buddy in some really hot spots. You seem as good at finding the spots to detect as you are at finding good things while there.

I also tend to go along with the "more people - less fun" crowd. I wonder if your zeal for production won't one day leave you (and maybe me) finding you're too late, with little left to find, because one of your 'protege's' got there first.

I like the saving history bit. I also like finding some myself. Like I said, two minds.
 
I quit posting on the forums here quite a while ago. Why? I'm glad you asked. You guys freakin' KILL ME! Bill is taking his time to go to a school and share his love of history as well as a great and decent hobby with these kids. But a bunch of you guys seem to have a problem with that. Are you that freakin' greedy that you are afraid there will be too much competition from these kids? Give me a break! This is the most ignorant thing I have read here in a long time:

How much fun will the hobby.........be when there are 10 detector users in every park???? N/T

the sale of a lot of detectors that will end up in the closet. I hope you keep your promotion in your part of the country. Having to many people working the local parks and beaches everyday will end up with every ones detector hanging in the closet..

I got news for you Jerry and Ivan....QUIT NOW! You will always be miserable looking over your shoulder for someone with a detector or trying to hunt an entire beach before someone else gets to it. Someone will always find more than you do, or something older, or more valuable. That's just ate up! I got a better idea for you. Stay out of the parks, schools, playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball fields, softball fields and so on. After all, they are for the KIDS.....RIGHT? Maybe they don't want you in there with your detector. Did you ever think of that? You are in there taking THEIR stuff.....aren't you?

As someone who has devoted a big part of my life to try to make life a little better for kids, I find this line of "Thinking" totally warped. Hey didn't you guys used to be kids? Didn't someone take time to share this hobby with you?

Bill Ladd.....WAY TO GO! Keep it up! Mr. Bill, Guvner.....whoever......take this post down if you feel the need. Don't worry about me....you won't see me signed in here again. Jerry J and Ivan....take a deep breath (and a laxative) and THINK about what you are saying.

If one's detecting skills are so poor that you feel threatened by an eight year old, then it's time to find a new hobby so that you can sleep better at night.

What Bill is doing can have two other very positive effects on young lives. One, we are raising a nation of couch potatoes that is having serious health ramifications because of obesity. Getting kids outdoors in the fresh air via metal detecting is a positive! Two, any activity that can interest them in the History of their Country and Region is a positive!

For those that don't feel so altruistic, a stronger and more vibrant detector industry leads to more competition and advancements. More detectors sold is a win/win even if they end up in a closet.

...knocks everyone for 'killing him,' then rags on someone else bad for their opinion. Then as quickly shoots back out, as if we have the plague or something. If we are all that bad, then there was little need to come in again.

I agree with you, Bill Ladd is a good one. What he did is also good, and deserves commendation. On the other hand, I don't have a chip on my shoulder for wht the other guys say either. In fact I agree with them, up to a point. Selfish? Not entirely.

You dont have to agree with what others say, man, but your 'dodgeball" technique for saying so is full of holes. Man up, and stick around.
