my sovereign GT arrived last night. i played aroung with it last night doing air tests. im looking forward to getting the detector out side. i have a little test garden i put together years back when i got my explorer XS. im going to have to put that explorer away so i can get pass the learning curve on the GT. i understand pinpointing with a DD coil so i think ill get pass that part pretty quick. im useing the setting that i got from reading everyones post on how they operate the GT. i know im going to have alot of questions soon. last night i when air testing i was in disc. with iron mask on. i was picking up a silver dime loud and clear but when i ran an old rusty bayonet over the coil i got nothing until i switched to all metal mode. does this detector have variable tones? where would i set the notch dial? should i run in pinpoint mode?lol oh man i'm going to have alot of questions. i like the straight shaft and seems a little lighter then the explorer. i need to get the S-1 probe. i have the X-1 on my explorer and i use it all the time. well thats enough for now guys. youll be seeing me again soon.

Lets do it backwards........

Don't search in pinpoint..the ground balance is deactivated.

Use the notch when you want to reject a narrow group of objects like tabs.

Variable tones........hundreds.

Wont pick up a rusty bayonette in disc mode? Yes it did.......
The null followed by the low buzz in the threshold says so. Means IRON.

Congrats on the new Detector!! I run the detector in discrimination in pinpoint, zero discrimination, zero notch and enjoy hunting with tones. Iron mask on will help you to find good targets around, close beside iron. You can pinpoint with a "DD" coil in discrimination using the heel or toe of the coil, without going into pinpoint all metal. Also the SOV/GT will be deeper seeking in discrim. mode than in all metal. I hipmount mine, isn't the new straight shaft just perfect? IMHO. Good luck with the SOV/GT..H.H.:)
 
Don't know if you simply did not state this clearly......

Pinpoint and either discrimination mode are not operable at the same time. The track, lock, and pinpoint are all metal functions only. Mode switch for disc/am must be in a/m for it to work.

thanks guys. cant wait to really get working on this machine. i'm off work all christmas week and im going to take it to long beach inland, new jeresy for it first real workout. leaving the explorer home. ill bring a few different types of targets to really get some good practice in and who knows. i have a sunray x-12 i use on my explorer so i'll be ordering a s-12 for the GT also. i have a X-1 probe on my explorer so ill be also getting the probe for the sovereign. i've learned its a must have tool with any detector.
any good beach advice you guys can help me with i'd sure be thankful for.

i have a SR-12 sunray super charger that i charge the battery on my explorer. i was wondering if i can charge the battery for my sovereign GT with it.

Just like the Explorer you needed the Sun Ray charging station for the battery pack, cant be charged using the charging port of the GT battery pack.

Good Luck Stan and unlike the Explorer where you turn iron mask off or a -16 so you can hear all the iron, The Sovereigns hates iron and you can not accept it in disc mode, in all metal you have no tone ID.

oh man my head is spinning. ive been air testing this detector and i dont know if im coming or going. the passed two days since i got it sometimes i think i got it then i dont. i know ill have to get through the learning curve by getting this machine outside. i remember what i went through with the explorer. the first week or two i wanted to wrap it around a tree a couple times but then one day it all came together. im at the point where im thinking that somethings wrong with the machine but i know its just the learning curve.
ive been reading this manual and nothings sinking in.

Ikon.....I've been "Sovereigning" for about 6 months now but I've been detecting for quite a few years. My transition to the Sovereign detector was one of the easiest things I've ever done but I had done a lot of pre-reading and always had in the back of my mind some golden rules which is mainly common-sense...
1. Coil low and slow
2. A nice smooth threshold
3. Sensitivity set to achieve the above point....don't get too greedy with this one as you will be penalised.
4. "Wiggle" on the iffy signals to maximise the chance of a good target letting itself be heard.

All the tips and advice you will ever need are right here on this site but I have one that works for me...

Sometimes you will get a deep target signal that when you "wiggle" over may leave the threshold high (good target) or it may null (bad target). If you remove just a couple of inches of sand the audio will go one way only (good or bad) and won't alternate between the two. I found a nice ring by doing this. The initial audio would null both ways of the sweep and then would "high tone" both ways of the sweep. After I kicked away a couple of inches of sand the audio was high and would NOT null.....I dug down a further 10" or more and there was a nice gold wedding band !!
The mistake I nearly made was to walk away from the signal after it made combination audio sounds...good and bad. The DISC was obviously at it's capacity.
The Sovereign "Wiggle" is the single most important thing you can do if there is any ambiguity to the audio signal.

Set volume to MAX. Wave a coin close over the coil, and adjust the headphones for a strong but not painful volume level of the target audio.

Adjust the threshold for a faint level that you will be able to constantly hear when there is no target present.

Ease off a little.

You're getting yourself swamped.

Air testing is not the same as real detecting. There is a feel to the coil motion and sound patterns the Sov makes on real objects. You will get to know the "words" the Sov makes up to describe them as time goes on.

You can't learn the Sov in a couple days any more than you can learn a foreign language in that time.

You will learn the "nicer" sound of coins and rings, as well as the really "rotten" sound of hacked up cans and wads of foil.

Don't think of the Sov tones as being single tones like you have in many other detectors. The Sov makes very complex sounds as opposed to the single or multiple tone "beepers".

Each Sov "word" is a full description of how the Sov sees the conductivity and strength of any object as the coil passes over.

Takes time.

Have to admit an Explorer had a long learning period for many and a Sov. is easy as pie to set up refer to Jim Vokes page and his simple Sov. setup.....http://www.frontiernet.net/~jvokes/detecting.htm
Might add if the sens. is stable at 12 move to 11 AM and even farther if you can for depth..Basic setup is simple at best and would set it up like Jim does and go to a beach and dig all as the audio takes a bit to learn. Lots of good info given on answers to your posts but feel this will help you as a good starting range..Once you learn the tones the meter will just be a double check...good luck with your new toy....
 
Art got it explained, but wanted to add I find I like to set my threshold in all metal pinpoint with the coil in the air to a slight hum so the coil isn't seeing anything. This is also for those that have had the the mods done for silent search in order to get them set correctly.
Another thing to remember with the Sovereign over the Explorer is the Sovereign the tone change and keep that tone until the next target. While the Explorer give a quick signal then back to regular threshold on every target.
Just stick with it Stan and learn what you can as it will get easier as you use it.

yea Art, i see your point as far as getting myself swamped. im looking too far into this deector before i even got it out side. saturdays going up into the 50's so ill take it for a walk around the high school.
thanks for all the help. i got the basic setting on how im going to start out and ill go from there. ive got a few friends in the detecting club that have sovereign's who said the next time their out i should go along which i will.
i realized i can only do or go so far with air testing but its helped me hear some sounds i can expect.
i should be getting a meter any day now just being i am a meter reader as ive detected alot with my explorer but at the same time sounds have stopped me in my tracks and found that the sounds are the first step in locating a target.
ill keep you guys posted on my progess. i think im going to really love this machine.

It is good to hear you have others in the area with the Sovereign, this will make it a little easier for you. You can check signals you so you can see what some of the deeper target sounds like and what some trash that can fool you too sounds like. A little hands on help is always better.
On the meter I too and very dependent on, I use the tone to get my attention and the meter numbers to ID those close tones. Now if they are deep than i just go more by the tones as the numbers sometimes are hard to get a lock on or the correct numbers if they are deep. This is one thing I have to say about the GT as i seem to always able to get the correct numbers on my Sun Ray DTI 3 on the deep targets and wonder if they did something different with the GT over the other Sovereigns.
Remember Stan have a little patience as this detector will get easier to use as you use it, the more you use it the better it gets, the better it gets the more and the better finds you will find.
