Pulltab...or gold ring?

New member
If you put your gold wedding ring on the ground, and sweep it, then, push and HOLD the pinpoint button, and slowly raise and lower your coil over it...now do the same thing with a pulltab that has the same TID as your ring...very distict difference in the Wah,wah noise...seems the gold ring is higher toned, and holds on longer the higher the coil is raised, while the pulltab is lower toned and drops off quickly..
I was just fooling with this today, so I'm not sure how valid this is, but every pulltab I hit, WAS a pulltab! Anybody ever try something like this or similar?
Oh, I got 39 coins and a earring in that trashy park again, dodging the rain. Five of the coins were nickles, five dimes, five Q's, an the rest P's. I bet this push and hold Pinpoint would work well on big gold rings that hit like Zincs...dont know yet though..sure hope it does..

Mud,
Good gold test I will try it here the first chance I get with my F75. Just wondering which detector you are using? Ron in WV

I dont have a big gold (63) ring left...i do have a small (23) gold ring, and the wifes, (32) my wedding ring hits at (36) a fellow would want to stomp a ring down in the dirt 3" or so to really get a good idea if this technique is valid. Everybody give it a try, I dont know if it will work if the ring is vertical, or if it has to be laying flat, I'm going back to that trash hole of a park today for another run at the gold..that earring I found yesterday was amidst the foil signals, (23) yet the signal held on as I raised the coil. Anything to speed up the process so a fellow doesn't have to dig all those tabs, anyway this is a good project for everybody to play with..I dont know if the program set up has anything to do with it, but I'm running 1disc, 53 sens, -5 thresh, de mode, dp tones, 1 notch, with the 11" dd on an F70.

Do you think it will make a difference where the Pull tabs are deeper, and the rings are too ?? I have noticed my 75 and T2 usually always said good..Dig me with a high tone, and good Id on the older
full ring tabs that were deeper than 6"....... Man if this worked I have several areas I would like to go back to............ when I get another 75 type detector. The T2 was better Iding the tabs than the F75. But still hit some of the deeper tabs..... Always past 6".......... Once out of the ground they didn't even hit at all.

Good Job Mud.Please keep us informed as you do more experiments.

It will be interesting to try that. Elton, you are correct. The one target, although usually somewhat bouncy, that fools the F 75 and me the most are deep ring tabs. I dig 2 or 3 a trip when hunting the woods as it is a spot where one will/should dig those iffy kinds of hits and usually that is what they are. HH jim tn

Just got back from the pulltabbiest place I could find...searched a wide swath from the door of the girls restroom to the picnic tables, swept another swath 20' out and around the pavillions, I figure this is about the distance an angry girl could throw an engagement ring, then swept the open areas where guys might throw a football or frisbee. Got 49 coins but no GOLD..Did a lot of experimentation on this subject, There was no lack of various tabs both square and beavertails, I would keep putting my ring on the ground a couple of feet away from a pulltab and concentrating on the sound nuances, I think you guys are right about the depth of the pulltab/ring and the halo effect dirt has...still, there is a noticable difference, pulltabs are sort of "washy" as compared to "pingy" when doing the wiggle...we are just a few hours from a good blast of cold, so you Southern boys have to pick up the project here..verdict is still out on this one, since as we know, gold comes in so many different forms/alloys, still, a mans wedding ring is right smack in the middle of the square tab signals, and girls class rings are too. Good luck!

Hey, this is interesing info! Has anyone tried this with the F5? I would try it but my F5 died on my last trip :( All the buttons are dead so no pinpoint. Looks like a trip to the doctor.

interesting next time i go i will take a few gold rings and try that, ive nailed 7 gold rings this year and one thing ive noticed is that they all give very solid readings that dont bounce much the lowest 22 thighest 55, stay warm hh

I did a time study on this process this am..it was pretty cold out so I could only get in an hour or so...I'm thinking its a lot quicker to just pop those tabs than fool around with the PP...I've gotten very fast from target aquisition to pouch by not using the pp much at all anymore anyway...just stabbin' and grabbin'. I got 5 Q's, 9 d's, 6 n's, and 17 p's this am, not to mention probably 30 pulltabs...One thing though, training your ears to focus on those pulltab/foil signals is worth while..seems the coins get to be an annoyance instead of the other way around...its probably a better idea to work on speedy target recovery/location since gold can be so variable..;.both my hands were froze up pretty good, you know when it hurts all the way to your elbows when you try to thaw them out!

Of course, that is easy for me to say setting down here with temps considerably warmer.:)HH jim tn
