Pinpoint with the coil on the ground centered over the target. Without moving the coil release pinpoint and in a few seconds you will hear a sound like Morse Code or silence.If it's Morse Code, dig it. If it's silent then lift the coil up about a half-inch or so from the ground. If you get a short blip, dig it. If none of these occurr pass it up or dig it if you wish.

Great little tip Bill. Just one question though. If you use this technique and the target is a ring, how would it respond? this isn't an issue in areas where rings are a low probability.

oldranger, I'm pretty sure that it works on any Garret machine that has pinpoint mode.

Hey, somethin' else I just thought about regarding double"D" searchcoils and bottlecaps. Yeah, they ring up as coins, BUT when you pinpoint and drag the coil toward you, a good target will produce a much smoother "rounder" sound. It's hard to explain, but a bottlecap will give a much rougher sound, not so smooth.
