Pushing the package

From my experience it seems like the difference between the successful detectorist and the not so successful one is experimentation . After 30 years swinging I am still experimenting with things surrounding our hobby.

Things to consider :

A. What techniques will you use to get closer to the metal things that are hiding the
targets ?

B. In popular sites, what areas do others pass up frequently - & do you do them ?

C. How wide & close to the ground is your sweep ? Every inch above ground is an inch
farther away from the target.

D. What about the areas that don't look like they should hold targets - but years ago
did & still do ?

E. Do you keep a log book of good sites so you can go back 1-2 years later when you are
a better detectorist ? or even 20-30 years later ?

F. Have you really learned your machine's usefullness ? Stick with one and learn it.

G. "Outside the box" as they say - do you not do what others say but do what your
intuition tells you to do ? Coins & gold are wherever you find them.

H. Do you "expect" to find silver, gold or relics when you go out ? A positive attitude has
a lot to do with it .

I. Do you research places before going to them - be it out of town trips or around town
tot lots ? If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

J. Do you challenge yourself or your companions ? I usually go alone but am always
pushing myself to beat my records. No one else is going to push you to do better.

K. Making collections & displays is a great way to encourage yourself to get back out
digging . Plus you have the confidence from digging all those things. And friends can
see just what you do - no just digging pennies.

L. Be open to different kinds of finds/digs. Not just silver coins or gold but the occasional
old bottle, tokens, relics - whatever opens for you. Sometimes a trip is saved by
finding things you did not set out to find.

M. Do you take the trouble to climb under things to detect - be it an old porch, a tot lot
structure, a low hanging branch ?

Maybe take advantage of this winter's inactivity to do some research - be it books, maps or just driving around looking.

Best of luck to all, Steve in so az

Sweatband

A SWEAT BAND? Up here we use really wide ones and pull them down over our ears to keep the frost off them. Today has been really warm, it was 40* for about 30 minutes before it started dropping again. We're supposed to be down to only 31* for the next 2 nights and the it starts dropping progressively again.

We love ya Steve! :clapping: You help us to remember there are warmer times ahead?

Well, I have done most of what you've said, but I am unable to stoop or crawl under things any more, for once down I am unable to get up, so that would be embarrassing when out :detecting: and also painful....but I sure enjoyed hunting for treasure when I was able to do so! May God Bless you to dig as long as you can and to find lots of nice goodies with more rings for Nancy!  Betty

....STEVE.....you sound like me.......I have almost 40 years of swinging the coil.....I have reverted to some of the older analog detectors ....not ever been a fan of the new automatic types.......I like the TID meters but they can be a hindrance......I know of some hunters who will not dig any targets that even come close to the Pulltab area on their meter.......I have found many gold rings especially on the beach and in the water by using zero discrimination.......on land......many gold targets and other miscellaneous targets such as tokens, watches, etc wind up registering in the pull tab area of the detector.....to find these targets........the TID meter is only one factor to look at ......just as important is the depth and the width of the target.....the older analog detectors do not have a problem with these areas......some of the new hunters with detectors like the V3 and the E-Trac have found some nice impressive coins.....but ask them about their gold and jewelry count and you will normally get answers like IT DOES NOT DO THAT........that is why I will stay with my old Garrett or old Compass........LOVE IN CHRIST......JOE

You find thousands of coins, and many silver and gold items every year! You da man!

Hey ... Here's another tip for all you 'wanna-bee' metal detectorist out there. Yah can't find stuff if yah don't get out there and dig. Nice advice Steve...thanks.

Beautiful day here in Spokane, mid 40s and not a drop of rain. Warm enough I did not need my sweat band.

Did I go hunting? NO, the Mrs. talked me into working on the deck that still isn't finished. BUMMER.... maybe tomorow.
