Puzzled ??

Well today I was at and OLD church site (1850's) And my ET running TTF kept hitting 01-31's to 01-50 showing max depth .
after walking a circle around one of these targets hitting 01-44 in all directions I dig ..........and I dig............and I dig ........ in tree roots mind you !!
at 18"-20" and 45 min's later the Garrett probe can't find anything I now have and air hole and get an iffy signal and abandon ship......
I hit several of the these 01-31--50's at max depth 12" plus spots on this sight .. Anyone have an idea as to what they are ?? Like I said this is a very old sight .
Thanks in advance !
Bill

Bill,

Those are your iron "wrap around" falses when running in TTF. If you do a search for Gaz's posts or Goes4Ever's posts they highly recommend discing out that top 01 line (except the big silver part) and that will stop most of 'em.

lately I have changed my set up to disc out 01-01 thru 01-30, reason being is I have found indians at 01-31 and with the wet ground lately I have had several deep wheats hit at 01-40, 41............it puzzles me that you say it hit from all directions, I would have dug that too. It had to be some HUGE deep iron. If my depth meter shows 7-8 inches I will dig to 10 inches and if I am still getting nothing with the pro pointer I cover up the hole and go on. It happens very, very rarely, as normally in TTF iron willonly hit good from one direction and scratchy or not at all from another direction after turning 90 degrees

let me ask you this, how are you running your sensitivity? I run auto +3 100% of the time, when I try manual I get so much falsing of signals It drives me nuts, I run in auto +3 because it is so much smoother, no chatter, 99% less falsing in the soil in my area.

Hey goesforever ! I'm running auto +3 also . Depth meter never came off of MAX depth .. I think what ever I found was in china ?? !!

When I covered the hole and scaned it again the signal was still there . I had a hard time walking away ...

Could be the find of the century or could be chasing ghosts... I've walked away from a few of these.

Good luck, HH

This may sound stupid but how close was you to the big tree?. I have had big signals like that next to a tree only to find out it was barb wire that had grown into the tree. And I had also found a double headed axe head that had grown into a knot at the base of the tree and cut it out with a chainsaw later when the tree blew over and died. There was also a very old cutter bar from a sickle mower under the roots.

I was about 4' from one tree and about 6' from another .
soil was damp and rooty for about the first 12" then turned to clay.

Wow clay pack is shallow... I've also notice tiny scraps of sheet metal have really ticked me off doin the same thing ur describing(With the X70). I'm still learning with the Etrac. On the small clay hills near the Red River in southern Oklahoma I get large high tone falsing, don't know if it is the same thing you are experiencing. The topsoil is only 2 or three inches in those areas. Have dug and dug to no avail. Good luck...

I suspect you got deep iron, try to dig deeper and you will see. Just for science.

Yea I might have to double back and dig it up just to see . All I had was my digging trawl . Might have to bring something bigger . Like a backhoe !! LOL
The clay pack was shallow because this is on top of a hill .............That's all the hints I'm giving ! :)

Note : When folks tell you the ET will go deep in TTF they are not kidding ! I was about 20" and it still sang to me .
Most of my pulls get a hammering beep beep at 6"-10".

I'm curious as to what sort of pinpoint signal were you getting with this? Before and after.

Was the original signal one that made you think you had a good target co-located with a piece of iron or the like? Or just a good DEEP target?

......large deep iron I reckon.....

The Garrett pinpointer has not gone off yet ..........
The pre dig signal was high 1-40's to 1-50 in all directions with the depth meter bottomed out .
I'm about to go check it again and turn my threshhold up to see if I'm maxing out .......

If you think it's a big piece of iron, pinpoint as best u can, get a metal antenna off an old car and try running it into the ground to see if you can hit it. I use it to find bottles might work here, to try and figure out how big and deep it is. Be sure to leave the little ball on the end of the antenna so if you hit a root it has the chance to skip off and move on and not stick into the root. GH

Well I went back to the sight and it was BIG Iron !! Ran unmask over the area even got a few spots ot overload the unit......
I think someone burried junk yard . VERY trashy !!
