Not sure what the issue is but I was not able to post this on the new Quattro forum despite being registered so I posted it here . . . . .
================
The post that compared the Quattro to the Explorer had a few holes in it so I wanted to post this as a follow-up:
<STRONG>Digital Display </STRONG>
Co-ordinate target ID <span style="background-color:#ffff00;">(#'s range from -10 to +40, very stable and consistent)
E Co-ordinate target ID (Ferrous & Conductivity values provided on the digital screen, 00 to 32 on both, considerable "bouncing" of values)</span>
<STRONG>Sensitivity adjust automatic/ and manual </STRONG>
Q Yes/ 0 - 20 (<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Choice is Manual or Automatic</span>)
E Yes/ 1 - 32 (<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Choice is Manual or Semi-Automatic, subtle but big difference in terms of how the machine selects the max sensitivity to use)</span>
<STRONG>Discrimination </STRONG>
Q Dimensional Conductivity (<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">No, the circuitry determines first determines of the target is ferrous or non-ferrous and then assigns a # corresponding to the ferrous or conductive nature of the target)</span>
E Dimensional Ferrous and Conductivity in Smartscreen (<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Smartscreen has nothing to do with disc. - this only shows you what is accepted / rejected. Both aspects of a target's composition are analyzed and used to determine what is accepted / rejected unless IM -16 is used)</span>
<STRONG>Sounds adjust</STRONG>
Q No (<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Yes, even though the manual does not say this is possible, you can select either Ferrous or Conductivty based audio sounds for any mode on the detector)</span>
E Yes
<STRONG>Trash Density </STRONG>
Q Yes

Andy, could you please give me a comparison on the Iron mask feature on the Explorer II Verses the Quattro. I really like this feature. To be able to locate good targets around Iron is awesome. Does the Quattro have something Comparable? Just wondering.
Tom

Tom,
Iron Mask has to be the most misunderstood fetaure on <STRONG>ANY </STRONG>detector ever built!
I've asked many, many users and dealers alike since the Explorer first came out to define Iron Mask and I have heard some amazing explainations.
================
<STRONG>QUESTION:</STRONG>
What does it mean to hunt in Iron Mask -16 on the Explorer?
================
<STRONG>ANSWER:</STRONG>
Simply that you are hunting in All Metal with target ID capabilities; i.e., visual and audio! No more, no less! This is the same thing as using a Garrett GTI 2500 in All Metal with target ID capabilities or a Whotes XLT / DFX in the same way. As you start to increase the IM setting, you are simlpy rejecting more iron response and hence increase the chance of target masking. You need to balance out the amount of target masking you are willing to accept against the amount of noise you hear and trash you recover. There are two distinct camps on this and let's not start that arguement again!
To equate this feature on the Explorer to the Quattro, simply accept targets in the -9 to +39 range. Target masking due to irom is virtually eliminated. I reject -10 due to those signals being rusted iron 99.9% of the time and +40 due to them being hot rocks or cinders 99.9% of the time.
Hope this answers your question
