Quattro high target numbers

I have a new Quattro that I have been using in coin mode at the beach and park. I have been getting unusually high target numbers for U.S. zinc pennies from 37 to 38 consistently. I use the noise cancel button regularly but it makes no difference. I have tried 3 different coils(stock, WOT and Joey) with similar results. This makes it very hard to discriminate pennies out since dimes and quarters fall in this range. Our soil has been very moist due to rain lately and I wonder if this is the cause? Any feedback would be appreciated.

What does your Quattro signal with these same pennies once they're out of the ground? In an air test? I've found zincs at the beach and in the ground and they usually give about a 34 and that's what I get in an air test. If you're getting 37 and 38 consistently your unit may need an adjustment. If it tests properly OUT of the ground then it may be environmental.

Mike,
I did some air tests and zinc pennies are 37, clad dimes are 37, clad quarters are 38. Something is definitely not right. I guess the unit is going back to Minelab for adjustment. Thanks.

Try a Indian head penny too as it will read the same as a zinc penny. The reason I ask about the zinc pennies is the reading you are getting are those up to 1982( these are copper and will read like a new dime), after 1982(these are zinc with a copper coating) they should be a lower number and tone just like a IH penny.

I did some more air tests on pennies of different condition - heavily crusted up pennies from the beach at 28, brand new penny 35 and freshly dug ones from the park 37. I'm confused now! Should the Quattro be doing this?

Rick,
There's the answer I have been looking for - you are exactly correct and air tests prove your statement. I guess there is no way to adjust the discrim on the Quattro to eliminate the pre '82 pennies and still get dimes. Even in ferrous audio they sound the same as a dime. I guess I'll have to dig them! Does the Explorer II have this same issue or can you tell a pre '82 penny from a dime with the fer/cond display?? Thanks.

I dont realy see any difference myself in tone or meter readings on the pre 82 pennies and the new dimes.

Ah, well, as Rick has pointed out, "ZINC" pennies are 1983 and later. So that explains that. Now as to heavily crusted pennies from the beach reading lower, that is also normal. Because the crusting up of the pennies is actually a change in the composition of the metal and it also produces bubbling, which makes these pennies actually have "puffed" areas. So it changes the whole dynamic. I have dug many a crusty and salty penny at the beach that sounded like something much better, even perhaps gold.

Many newer pennies depending on their composition will mimic a dime or above and even a silver. Not many target ID machines can seperate them and even then not all the time..As Mike relates to crusted coins from saltwater beaches can really mimic other coins or even gold rings in the high range so at a salt water beach dig all. To me a meter is useless in this situation and when I used a Sov. left the meter at home..

i think i would have to disagree with you on that one rick are you in digital mode or not?
pennies on my epx xs or in a diff. place when in the smart find mode ..they arent as conductive and a little more to the ferrous side . never tried the dig. mode dont really care for it . and i also have a quattro but dont use it much ...

Now if you are talking pennies made between 1983 to 2004 there is a difference in the ferrous and the conductivity of these compared to a new dime or a pre 1982 penny. On the pre 1982 penny and the clad dimes they do read the same ferrous and conductivity in both digital and smart screen for me, but the 1983 to present pennies read lower conductivity and a higher ferrous.
