Quattro on its way, but...

Hello all !

Bought a 2nd hand Quattro, will get it tomorrow:clapping:. But I have kind of a stupid question:confused: : I live near the beach and go hunting in the neighborhood by foot, bus, or bike, with my detector in a bag on my back.

So the stupid question is : is it wise to dismantle the unit in two or three parts for transportation? Rugged and easy enough? This will be my first :minelab: and that will be quite a change considering my actual BH Lone Star.

Thanks in advance

HH with :minelab:

Hi, Nick I actually transformed a 2 kid jog/bike trailer to a MD cart can mount my md full size to cart along with all the crazy accessories you can think of I can push it or hook it up to my bike, I dont like the idea of pulling the unit apart and getting dirt and debri in there.
I just about have the cart finished so it hasent been tested yet.HAPPY HUNTING:.. JOE

I can't wait to see the pics. Really curious about it, cause I 'd hate to dismantle the unit too. (In the meantime, got it this morning:clapping: and it's found its first gold ring !!)

Took it apart, works well but the sand getting into the parts could be a problem, hence my question.

I'm also inclined not to dismantle the unit if you can get away with it. The more you dismantle it, the more likely for wear and tear to occur on the fittings. See if you can mount it on your bike somehow, as Ductman suggested. Wish you all the best with your new detector!

Thank you for your advice, Golden. I tried to make the unit as short as possible today, but somehow the coil cable won't allow the manoeuvre.

I cannot bring the coil very close to the fitting of the center stem, there is a resistance of the coil cable.

I'll try to find something out.

Nick, I haven't used mine for a while, because it's in the pawn shop "temporarily", but if my tired old brain remembers anything at all, it seems like I almost always undo the latches at the housing and the middle of the shaft, then pull down the top part of the shaft in order to get at the coil end better (the end that attaches to the housing), then I put the housing and the other half in my "big bad blue" carry bag (that's what I call it) which I bought from Kelllyco. I agree with everyone about being careful with the ends and not bending the cable, especially at the ends too much. I think it's a very rugged unit, but I know from experience as a musician using cables all my life, that if you flex and bend them too many times, sometimes they'll get a short in them right near the ends, so, I'd just "baby" it at those points. One thing to always remember, and this goes for any plug, is ALWAYS PULL ON THE PLUG IT'SELF, NOT THE CORD ATTACHED TO THE PLUG. I know that's kind of a "no brainer", but you'd be surprised at how many people will just grab the chord and yank on it to pull it out of the housing, or wall, or whatever unit we're talking about. Of course by pulling on the cord it'self, it'll weaken the attachment to the plug. The other "big no-no" is to never, ever try and undo or try and pull out the cable from the coil it's self. I know they stress that in the owners manual also. It would be nice if we could do that, but the warranty doesn't even cover that, I don't believe. I've never taken the housing apart either. I'm too chicken that I might void the warranty, but I'm excited for you that your now a proud new or even used Quatro owner. Welcome to the "Quatro gang". I still love mine, and hope to get it back soon. Keep those "cards and letters" coming. We're all getting "hungry" for some new blood, or any kind of blood, to post here on the Quatro forum. Don't let the lack of posts lately scare you. You still bought an awesome detector, and there's many, many great, informative posts in the "achieves" of this forum you can read that are not only interesting, but extremely informative. There was a time a few years back, when you couldn't hardly read all the new posts on the Quatro section of this forum, without getting tired out, so go back to the achieves and I think you'll be pleased. Marc Trainor, other wise known as "backslider". (at least that's my name for now, till I get my life straightened out a bit)

Thank you Backslyder. That was very helpful. The main preoccupation I have in mind concerns the upper latch, the one attached under the control housing. What if it starts weakening. The unit is rather on the heavy side, so I' a bit anxious about that. Of course it looks and is rugged, and I'm sure it's one Indiana Jones would put in his backpack,:detecting: but I am prone to baby my equipment, hence my question.

I also learnt a lot reading the archives as you suggested, especially about rechargeable batteries. (I plan tu use NiMh 2000ma with the unit.)

I will post my very first find with the Quattro separately.

God bless and Happy Hunting with :minelab:

Right on!! Nick!. I'm glad you took a look at some of the archieves. I still think there's a world of information and fun stuff too, by reading them. Yes, yes, yes!!! on the Nickle Metal Hydride batteries. To me it's " the only way" to fly, cheaply, at least. I've had mine almost since day one, and they're working great. I have 2 sets of batteries, so I just keep re charging them and I always seem to have at least one "full" set. Any way, I can understand your concern on the latches. You know, they look pretty strong, but I've always wondered if I'm opening "pandoras box" by constantly "breaking the deteector down" in order to get it in my big blue bag. I don't know, but I'd certainly baby them as well as anything else, just for "good measure". To me, that always makes sense, with almost anything, in order to keep it in better shape, for a longer period of time. Take care, and love to hear how you do in the future. Marc.
