Is your yard real trashy? Have you read the manual? Is your sensitivity set to "Auto", because if you're in a yard and there's aluminum trash, underground wiring, pipes, etc. in the ground it's definitely not the place to be running anything other than "Auto". Running sensitivity in manual should be limited to very clean sites or the beach.
When you stop and try to locate these things are you using the pinpoint mode? The pinpoint on mine works real well. The depth gauge is made for coin-sized objects and is off on larger things as well as aluminum scraps, etc. But on coins in the ground I have found it to be fairly accurate. You really might do well to read the Andy Sabisch book. It's very good and may shed some light for you.
Did you get the machine new? I forget. So it's under warranty? I suppose something could be wrong with it, but hard to tell at this point. I would suggest talking to the person you bought it from but I also think you need to get out of your yard and down to the beach or to a field or someplace with less house junk in the area. Do some more testing before you decide there's a problem. Maybe some others have some ideas too.
Hope some of that helps...

I have a Quattro and I too have found it to be accurate. Make sure to press the noise cancel button (as outlined in the manual) before you start searching.
While you are hunting in all metal mode, you can also pick up lots of unwanted signals.Try coin / jewelery mode.
When I started a few weeks ago, I read a suggestion that worked well for me..hunt in sandy places -
beaches and playgrounds. It does wonders for your confidence.

I would recommend talking to your Dealer. They should be able to answer your questions and help you with advice. Andy Sabisch has released his new Quattro book, and it is great for better understanding your Quattro, but never hesitate to call your Dealer. Many times a person will give up on their new detector before ever giving their Dealer the opportunity to help. As with Explorer's, you NEED to use Noise Cancel to obtain stable operation. If you are using your Quattro in AUTO Sensitivity (and you should until you get used to the detector), you should not be getting the noise you are describing unless you are in a high trash area and are passing over targets.
I have talked to Explorer users that have never used their Noise Cancel feature . . . . amazing they have stayed with the detector!
Hope this helps
Andy Sabisch

should run stable at the beach..... unless your running too high sensitivity or outside interference.. like Andy said make sure you noise cancel... however bad coils do that same thing or a loose or wet cable connection
