quattro sweep speed

Hi All. I was wondering how slow I can go with the quattro and still have it perform properly? I was told by my dealer here that you can go as slow as you'd like with "any" of the Minelabs. But I just wanted to ask others about how they felt about sweep speeds. I know the quattro has a slower recovery speed on targets so it's actually a plus going very slow. I sweep as slow or as fast as I can and still maintain a threshold tone. Here is a better answer from Capt Kirk of the Explorer forum...

Some important points from Capt. Kirk's post...
"This experiment show how important sweep speed is in being able to properly detect multiple targets in close proximity. It also gives important clues about the importance of sweeping from different directions." also his recommendation of "from very very slow to about 1 foot/sec"

if your looking for deep targets. Now if I've only got a short while to hunt and want to cherry pick, then I pick up the pace with the sweep speed and mainly hit skallow targets. Yes, it does have a very slight lag in recovery speed, but it's not as drastic as some have made it to be. I haven't found that to be any real problem for me anyway.
 
reading might be off an inch or so with the 8" coil compared to the DD coil. I dug a dime this morning that was a good 8".
 
I know you haven't had it long and these things do take a little time to learn. I've been curious though...how are you liking the Quattro now? I hunted with my Explorer II today and towards the end I switched to my CZ-70. First time I've used it in months. I found silver and wheats with the Explorer II and wheats with the CZ. Both were digging targets at 8" to 10" at this older school site. Both made me feel very confident that if it was there, I was getting it. Only one got the silver though. Interestingly, I dug more wheats in half the time with the CZ than I dig with the Explorer. Both times the Explorer hit silver, it was singing a sweet song...I KNEW I had silver. Wouldn't trade either machine though.
 
I'm beginning to like the Quattro quite a bit. It is a very nice detector and to me, one of the deepest that I have used. I would rate it right up there with the Coinstrike & CZ70 as far as depth goes, and for turn on and go operation, I would rate it along with the CZ70. Now the Coinstrike, took me a lot more time to get used to and eventually like. But now, it's one of my favorites and definately a keeper.

All in all, I feel the Quattro is going to be a keeper. My only regret is that I traded my CZ70 for it boo hoo, boo hoo, but maybe when I sell another ship model, I can take that cash and buy another 70. Because to me, if you could only own one detector, it really should be the CZ70 even if they stopped making it.
 
hi all,

I went to the beach today just to get some in field time. I brought a few targets with me so i could practice. I was concerned that my Quattro could not find a small 14k cross even when it was right on top of the sand! I checked some other targets including some white gold,silver coins and a 19k gold ring all of which my Quattro picked up with no problem. I was in all metal mode also tried c/j and relic. I noised cancelled whenever i changed modes but still would not pick up that small cross. I found it with a Radio Shack machine last year. Can anyone shed some light on what the cause could be? I appreciate everyones posts and have learned a lot from reading them. There is alot of experience and good advice in here.

I'm not sure why that would be but can say I found some pretty small gold stuff with my Quattro and have found a number of small gold charms with my Excal. Chains are often tough unless they're heavy or balled up, but a gold cross I would think would be no problem for the Quattro. If you were in all metal I would say there was no point in going to C/J and Relic to try it because it would have picked it up in all metal. But here are a few questions:

First, just HOW small IS it? If a Radio Shack picked it up I suppose it's not that small...I'm sure the Quattro would get 3 times the depth of the RS detector on a quarter or a dime and there have been no shortage of lots of folks finding gold with them.

Where was your sensitivity? Were you in Manual? Did you try it at 17 or 18 in manual? I would expect it to find it even in Auto, but again, not knowing the size...

Were there any other machines that were on and in close proximity to you when you tried this? Oftentimes another machine can mask a target. Or something else under or near the target. I assume you tried it in more than one spot? Other than that, not sure.
 
Hi Mike, just did another air test on that cross, this time with the machine I found it with.

The machine could not pick it up, it must have been the sterling chain that the cross was attached to that the machine picked it. I don't understand why it would be 14k on the back if it was not gold.

I know the Quattro is a great machine, and I have found coins at killer depth, (but no gold yet) this is why I was a bit baffled that it would not pick up the cross. Thanks for the input

Is this the Detech coil I see from a large metal detecting company based in Florida? How much lighter is this concentric coil? I wonder if the meter ID updates faster as well?
 
don't have a digital camera right now. my kid has it at school. I can tell you the cross is small.About 3/4 of an inch long and quite thin,also it is hollow except for the area where it is stamped 14K on the back.It was on a sterling box chain also very thin but long.I think that is what the machine picked up.

I have been using it that it is a tad bit faster on the Quattro's recovery time. It's designed for trashy sites & also beach hunting, I guess it helps with the falsing around mineralized soil and this is why it's great for the beach. I found it to be more stable then the DD coil at Daytona. I would say it's a good 1/2 pound lighter then the DD coil. I can definately tell the difference from the DD to the 8" coil.
 
Wow, that's pretty interesting. I'm wondering if you also did an air test with the Quatro on that chain/ and or/ cross. I think that would reveil a lot of info on this find. See if the Quatro picks it up and at what distance.?
