Question about 30 vs 50 on depth!

I have air tested the 30 to the 50 and the 50 seem to hit about 2 1/2 inches deepper. On the flier the 30 is standard depth and the 50 has enhanced depth. Has anyone tested the 2 in the field? I do not mind the 30 does not have ground balance but 2 to 3 inches more in depth would be worth the extra money!good hunting,Joe
 
Not having a ground matrix for either will effect the depth of detection. You might be able to actually find what the X-30 is fixed at, by adjusting the X-50 so they both "air test" the same. If you had the X-50 manually set at a level other than what the fixed setting was on the X-30, I would imagine you will get a difference.
I have both the X-30 and the X-50, and find that IF the mineralization allows the X-30 to operate with no change in response (when lowering and raising the coil toward the ground, but being careful to not actually touch the ground) AND properly adjusting the X-50, the results are similar between the two models. With that said, I find that I must set the X-50 manual GB differently for most every site I have been hunting. Even in my moderately mineralized soil conditions. So, I guess my answer would be that, if you found a site where the X-30's fixed ground balance was "a perfect setting", and you adjusted the manual ground balance of the X-50 at optimum, they would provide similar depths of detection. As to what Minelab describes as enhanced depth, I can't say. I wonder if it is actually a difference in technology, or if it is simply the ability for the X-50 to be manually ground balanced. Maybe someone from Minelab will read this and address it. HH Randy
 
I have found the depth on the 2 models to be comparable. In the areas that I have hunted (at least inland) I have not had to adjust the 50's GB and haven't noticed any discernable depth advantage vs. the 30.

Perhaps as Randy suggested the "enhanced depth" of the 50 may be due to its adjustable GB, but I'm not a techie so that is just an educated guess. All I know is that they both work for me.

it will be very close to the factory-designed setting of the X-Terra 30. Then, make sure you have them each in the All Metal mode with maximum sensitivity and do your comparisons. I found them to be very, very close in performance in the field.

Hi Monte,

Nice tidbit. So I guess that since my X-Terra 50 is running at 3 where I hunt that an XT30 would be out of balance, and therefore suffer a performance hit. In other words, how they will compare will depend on ground conditions.
