Question about Sovereign GT audio

sovereignelite

New member
So I have an Elite. I have a switch for fixed or variable tone. I like the variable tone. What tone setting does the GT have, seeing as it does not have this switch?

The GT is variable. If it was one tone I would never use it lol. I love the harmonics of the GT. For me, it tells a very detailed story of what is underneath the coil. HH - Jim

Same here! I am planning on getting a GT soon and I was wondering if it were variable...I would hate fixed tone. Thanks for the info!

your welcome - Jim

I sometimes use my Elite in fixed, but usually (90%) I keep it in Variable. I do hunt in All Metal and switch to disc to check whether or not to dig. I've hit targets in all metal that don't even crack the threshold in disc until I remove some sand from on top of them. The Sovereign is a great machine!

The Elite is a great Sovereign the one I use now.Even though the fixed tone will not be used much there is one advantage.Lower conduct target tones are too gravel and have a bark or burp, with the fixed tone position this is eliminated. The super tuned Sovereign brings the high tones too high, but the mid or low tones for some are better. With the fixed tone one may have an advantage searching for relics or jewelry. Thanks Ron

Ron, doesn't the GT circuit board still have the fixed tone jumper where you could wire up an external switch to go fixed tone? I'd never do that anyway as the multi tones are one of the biggest perks, combined with the long rich detailed audio which is fantastic for telling target traits.

I was thinking of the surface pot on the control board to change the pitch that some have done- I might play with that but will be sure to mark the factory setting before mucking around in case I want to set it back to stock. I was used to a bit higher pitch for silver from my Quantum XT days, but now I've tuned my ears to the somewhat lower (but still high) pitch of silver on the Sovereign.

One idea I've been kicking around is to pigy back a second pot onto the stock one by mounting the second pot on the face plate as a tone control. Then I could mark it for "stock" or various other raised or lowered pitch options. I was thinking perhaps a "nickel/gold" low/mid conductor pitch mode where it would make that stuff give a higher pitch when say ring or button hunting or something.

One advantage to being able to move the entire pitch scale of the conductivity range of targets up or down the scale a bit is that people could tune it for their individual hearing. Some have low frequency hearing loss and others have high frequency hearing loss. I suspect I have high frequency loss because I always end up turning up the tone on a stereo so I can hear certain parts of the music better.

Wiring up an external pot tone control probably would be pretty low risk since I wouldn't have to muck with the pot on the circuit board. I'd just need to solder a few wires to it to piggy back the external pot control. If I ever get around to messing with that I'll probably do a mod video.
