Question about the 250

I just purchased the ACE 250 for my daughter for Christmas and I notices when I turn it on there is a hi pitched sound coming from it. Its not loud, kinda sounds like when you get your headphones close to the coil on other detectors. Is this normal? Also since I'm asking it came with the Garrett headphones and it is extremely loud when you put the headphones on ( not the high piched sound but the detector itself ), Is this normal also? It works fine just didnt know if these were normal or not. Thanks for any info.

Is this sound consistent? Since the 250 has no volume control one needs phones with a volume control. Why Garrett doesn't equip the 250 with these is beyond me. I'm sure it wouldn't break them.

You have to get real close to hear it, right, like with your ear right up to the detector? If so, the noise you hear is normal. It is some sort of oscillator noise, I would think. Those of us old enough to remember vacuum tubes, will recall that TV's used to emit the same sort of noise. My Ace 250 does it, too.
I know others have reported it, as well.

About the sound of detected targets. The Ace 250 has a loud audio response, with no built in adjustment. This means you need some headphones with their own volume adjustment. The ones that come with the detector are usable, but are not built to last for long. Consider them as starters, and as soon as you can, upgrade to some better ones.

That high pitched tone is normal. Some can't hear it.

Thanks everyone, I just had to make sure. I'll just have to let my daughter use my killer B's until i can get her a pair of her own. This is a nice little machine I am pretty impressed with it. I have Minelabs myself but I wouldn't mind hunting with this machine.

I'm not sure why it so fun to use a 250. I know when my kids grab it to mess around outside I don't worry about a thing. Or when I leave it in my truck seat. If you do that with a $1000 detector you get a little worried. One of the best things I like is all the adjustments are on the face. No menus to scroll through.

PS: The slight high pitched hum emitting from the detector is simply the nuclear reactor. This is where the 250 gets it's great power from.
