Question about the 99 tones.

Without having another X-Terra 70 for a reference point, I was wondering if it's normal for the tones to sound strangled a bit, when in 99 tones?
When in 4 tones, the tones are clean.

I'm not a big user of multi-tone as I like to listen to the purity of a single tone. This may be because I'm "Old School" from the era when there was only one tone. But that said, I use 3 or 4 tones most of the time as it provides a single tone most of the time on identified targets and gives me an idea of what it is. If it jumps between tones then more likely it is junk or a mixed target situation.

However I did use multi-tone on the X305 the other day as it has fewer multi-tones than the X70. And I found I could get along with it better than on the X70, where perhaps that strangling effect you refer to, is what I perceive as the tones varying too much/quickly to judge their purity.

I will be hinest. All I can handle is 3 tone. I tried 4 and mutiple and could not deal with it? Heck use what works for ya. Good hunting to you, Beale.

I found that all metal with 2 tones makes the 70 shine. For me that is.

On the original version of the X-Terra (X-30, X-50 and X-70), the only one to offer "99" tones was the X-70. In fact, it was not 99 tones. But rather, 28 tones or one for each notch segment. On the new series (305,505 and 705), all three models offer an audio mode that allows one tone per notch segment. (mulitple tones) Since each of these detectors offer a different number of notches, the number of tones available varies by model. The thing to keep in mind when using the "multiple tone mode" is that, as the TID numbers fluctuate, so will the tones. If the audio tone is blended (harmonic) or sounds "strangled", as you say, then the numbers will not be "locking in" either. JMHO HH Randy

I've just been out side playing around with it some more and tried both the 70 and 30 standard coils on it. I also used the 5x10, the 10.5 round DD and the 6in concentric. It seems to only do it on the standard coils. It does it without changing notches and sounds like a split note (same note). It gives a clean tone mostly on the other coils. although it doesn't sound smooth, IT DOES allow me to hear the sides of a screw cap that hasn't been flattened! It sounds very close to the same as my Explorer does when you go over a screw cap. It gives a bit of a wobble as it passes over. Coins tend to sound more even, although they can fluctuate a bit. It'll take a bit more experience before I can say that it will be useful or not, but will enjoy finding out. In the mean time, I'll have to send it in for repair as the numeric display doesn't fully light up (ie when 28 shows up, I get either a backwards 9 or an E instead of the . I just wanted to be sure that I didn't need to get anything else attended to while it was in.

I must admit that I was gob smacked when I saw the level of features on the new 305. For about the cost of a coil, I could sell my old one and upgrade. It'd be beeaudiful! It's great when you have a cheap detector that performs. You don't worry about getting it knocked around or pinched as much. In fact, I might just take the trusty old 30 out now. The family has just left for in in laws for the school holidays and it's a bit gloomy out-side. We might even get some more of that wet stuff today. Almost a rare sight in these parts.
