Re: The "Weirdo" image. When you are out MD'ing and people stop to talk to you, spend a bit of time talking to them. You can start to change that image. Sometimes I talk with several people a day. I miss some hunting time but I also am promoting the hobby. Just a suggestion. You can also get good leads this way. HH Jack in Austin

I don't mean to hijack the thread with a tangent, but this has always stuck in my craw. I've had people look at me strangely or embarrassingly while detecting, because they though I was out grovelling for change. I've taken to double zip tying gold and silver rings onto the upper arm of my ACE. Now when they snicker and ask if I'm looking for pennies, I say no, I'm looking for these, and point at the rings. It's pretty much a jaw dropper, let's get serious now, experience for most of those looky loos. There's just something about gold and silver that catches their immediate interest.

I recently bought and read a book called the urban treasure hunter. I enjoyed it. It was about a guy who detects in NYC. Doesn't get more urban than that.

I have kin in Buda,we go down quite often my sister in law said hunting in parks and schools in Austin is off limits . Any insite on this? We go to the comal river and dive, but just eyeball finds (don't have a water detector yet)

She is right! All parks and wildlife preserves in City of Austin are illegal to hunt. Also all parks in the county (Travis) are illegal to hunt. Our local metal detector club is constantly working to correct these laws.
Schools are good to go. Just fill the holes.
San Marcos has a lot of good places to hunt and not that far from Buda. College town, losts of lost jewelry
Good luck and happy hunting! Jack in Austin
