Question for anyone about Deep and Fast settings

As far as the Deep and Fast. What do they do for you? I understand the common sense explanation, but when I turn them on will they really help me? Are they just one of those settings that really dont matter whether they're on or not? I hunt old house sites and field sites as many of you know. I have pretty good success too, so I was wondering if turning these on will boost my finds? I don't want a big long techy response, just a simple yes or no and a reason or two.

Thanks, Weston

I don't use deep because i run my sensitivity and Gain high.
i do use fast to speed up the processor.

Use deep for those real old places that may contain real deep coins.

Use fast for the trashy areas..

Certainly argumenttive about using both at the same time but personally feel they do not work in tandem but sort of work against each other.

Plain and simple explantion in laymans terms...and yes they do work if used properly....

I hunted with fast and deep both ON for a full year...and did well.

I also hunted with Fast ON deep OFF for a while and did well.

Once I switched Fast and Deep BOTH OFF though...I started finding deep walked over silver and injun's like never before.

For me...fast ON clips the good signal short...and I don't like it.

For me deep ON distorts the signal too much...and I don't like it.

I already have my gain jacked to 10...so there is no need for me to have deep ON anyway.

Just my opinion and what I prefer.

There is NO right or wrong way...only the way that each of us as individuals prefer.

Deep gives the processor a little longer look at the target as well as increasing all the sounds by filtering less of the deep minerals and targets. If you are using a lower Gain which modulates those deep targets it doesnt hurt to run Deep on especially in clearer areas. In trash i think you tend to miss more target than you would with it off. Fast works well in real trash... but it does chop the tones and you tend to not recognize some of the deep targets because its going on to the next target. I will use Deep if im in clear areas that i want to work slowly with a low gain and a little higher sensitivity. I really hunt slow in trash, so for me i dont use either ON in those areas. Since high gain also increases the sound of the targets i just dont use DEEP on with high gain.

Just remember in quickstart neither of them are on and quickstart with the sens. jacked up makes for a formidable unit in its own right..Certainly personal preferences, ground conditions and above all other settings all have an effect so do a little experimenting as Bryce relates to whatever works and no right or wrong way.Any unit you use all has their give and takeaways and certainly changing one setting may indeed alter another..I would bet ask the forum for their settings and just might see some interesting and different settings but the most important aspect they all work for the individual posting his settings..
First time I ever used a XS when they first came out used quickstart with sens. jacked up into the low twenties and a lowered threshold to my preference and hunted a beat to dealth campground area and came up with a silver dime and half, 9 wheaties and a buffalo nickle 8-10 inches deep so you over tweakers bear this in mind and above all use what works for you as an Explorer can be as easy or hard as you want it ot be.

I've had my SE for about 2 1/2 yrs now. Bryce's posts and Andy's book really shortened what COULD have been a long, frustrating learning curve.
I feel one of the main reasons for this post is to help each other benefit from each others' experience. (In addition to sharing fun "finds" stories).
I hunt in IM mostly open -28, sensitivity usually around 26+ (manual whenever possible), and gain at 9. I use deep ON if I'm in an area that is yeilding deeper,
older targets - but most of the time I leave deep and fast off and rely on the gain. I used to use deep ON more often but after listening to others on the forum
I usually leave deep off. Seems to give a better signal with the higher gain. Try it ALL and decide for yourself.

I learned that same thing Dan when i used the DFX over tweaking sometimes isnt the answer. Ive tried a little bit of everything and still use different setting in various areas. Its nice to try different setting to learn what they do or dont do for your style of hunting. Thats all apart of that know your machine. Then when you hit those areas that your normal setting dont work.... then you know how to make the proper adjustments. I noticed someone on here was using manual sensitivity.... 32. Id be more likely to use 15 before ever using 32. Ive always used gain at 9 as well because a wise man called Jeff Foster once said in his book.... why strain to listen to those weak tones when you can hear everything. Well ive been trying 7 gain lately and found it works pretty good and you hardly have to look at the screen. With low IM you dont have to listen to all those weak tones that are nothing by minerals or EMI. It still requires MORE patience.
