have a PI, damping resistor runs worm, not hot, is this normal.what can be don to get it to run cooler.

Much of the energy put into the coil and stored in the magnetic field during the ON time, is dissipated in the damping resistor at switch off. It is normal for this resistor to get warm, and an appropriate wattage resistor should be used.
