Question for SE users

I'm a newby to the detecting work and decided to start with the best. I've noticed that the meter id is not stable on target deeper than 3-4 inches. The cursor or the digital reading jumps around on the screen even on a good target. On some, even silver the cursor is jumping to the top left. Do I have a problem with the machine? Thanks, EddieB

There are many factors that can cause the cross hair to jump around including sweep speed and other smaller targets in close proximity.

Go by sound and repeatability and you should be fine.

Having owned the Explorer II and the SE, in MY ground the explorer sucks at any kind of stabiltity on ID'ing coins 3-4 inches or deeper. The sovereing had a much better target lock when i used it. Dont know why, but thats what i experienced using the Explorer. Brian

it should lock on to good targets unless the sens. is set too high. Lower the sens. until it runs more smooth. Also, use more disc. until you learn the detector. My 2 zincs.

getting muddled a bit. My post to Eddie is that it is common in MY ground that the explorer cross hairs do not lock very well on a coin 3-4 inches down with NO other targets nearby. We are talking just sweeping over one target. This is my experience with two different machines and my friends explorer. Manual/auto sens, default mode, IM 0pen etc. doesnt seem to make a difference. Both my Elite and GT would run circles over the Explorer on coin ID stability and I hoped by going to the explorer i could gain more depth but was surprised at the poor ID lock on 3-4" coins. No way i could cherry pick.....Brian

simple answer turn sens. down to one knotch below whatever is stable. For instance say you turn it down and you get a stable meter at 16. turn it one more knotch to 15 and leave it. If you get into more mineralized ground, and it becomes unstable again go lower.

I only reject iron ,everything else - i dig!. Yes i dig alot of trash, but by using only iron discrimination i find every single good target hidind underground. I don't mind digging , you have to makeyour self like digging to get good finds. I dig the lot out , foil , tabs , lead, screw tops , the only thing i reject is bottlecaps.
