What is the lowdown on the Cortes by Tesoro_Over on another forum I had my mind made up on the Troy X5 until I read the return posts. From what I can read on the Cortes,it has everything I want.I'm just wondering why nobody talks about the Cortes. Is there some flaw with it or what?I was going to go for the Deleon but the Cortes pretty much has it all.Any comments are welcome. I like my Cortes. It seems to work pretty well for me under most conditions. I think my meter is lacking, often, in terms of accuracy, but I've done pretty well with it. A lot of people dont like the smallness of the info on the screen, but I have pretty good eyes, and can see all the info well. The problem that I've been running into is when the detector is used in mineralized ground (ie. out in our NW forests) in disc. mode. The thing chatters a lot and falses a lot. But all in all, I do enjoy using it. It is really light, but then again so is the x-5(I guess, since I've never used one). Dont know if you can really compare the two detectors. I think the x-5 is supposed to be geared more toward relic hunting, while the cortes is more geared toward all around/coinshooting. This is just my opinion. There are far more qualified/experienced hunters that could give you a lengthier rundown on the pluses and minuses of each detector. I might guess that one question that will be asked is what you will be doing with it?(playgrounds, schools, or CW/relic sites). Good luck with your decision.

ps Tesoro seems to be a company that takes good care of their detectors and detectorists

It all depends which forum I'm on.I've tried to make this computer change everything to Bob,but I guess it's a female computer because IT does what IT wants.I get along better with my metal detectors than this computer.BOB

My main targets would be jewelry and coinshooting(grass, woods, beach, etc.)and some relic hunting.Relics aren't my main interest but I'll pick them up if I come across something interesting.Bob HH

Like you, I cannot comment on the X5 as I haven't been near one! in my neck of the woods over here in the the Cortes was regarded very highly. However, with the introduction of the Laser Hawkeye, (European version of the Deleon) Many Cortes users are switching to the Hawkeye! it has a bigger display than the Cortes, and only the simple but essential controls. Great thing about the Hawkeye / Deleon is; it uses the same board as the Cortes, so expect the same performance. The clincher is: it retails at

What is the soil like over there? Do you ever have problems with mineralization? Lots of iron? I can imagine that an area with as much history as yours, that you would have iron waste scattered everywhere that you would have to fight with.
Thanks for the compliment.

Sure do, we have history squirting out of the ground underfoot! Seriously though, if we detect on ANY old site, there is ALWAYS going to be a mineralization / iron problem involved Thankfully, the Hawkeye and the old Silver Sabre seem to be able to deal with this problem pretty well. I had a real nightmare on some sites with my old DFX, and often ended up going back to the car to whip out the trusty Tesoro! I've been on several different sites with the Hawkeye now, and have not experienced any problems related to mineralization. I still visit the DFX FORUM regularly, and they are STILL arguing the toss over sweep speed, and such! this suggests to me that it is over-complicated and ambiguous .... give me the Hawkeye any day! HH charlie(UK)
