question from a possible omaga user

jimmy clark

Active member
ive metal detected now for 18 years. used about eight different detectors. ive been looking at the omaga, only reading about them on this forum. i have used my dfx for seven years an like it, mostly hunting gold rings. is there anyone who has used mostly other detectors besides bounty hunters that can say that it would be a quality back up? thanks for any imput

Do not have a DFX. I have used whites, garrett, tesoro, fisher, metrotech and teknetics over the past 40 years. I was using a sovereign elite when bought the omega .Put the DD coil on it and my sovereign has been gathering dust till I go to beach. Have not used omega there yet. You might find yoursel using the omega more than the dfx. Used mine in an area that had been gone over by a friend with dfx. Found 18 coins he did not get. It is close to the T2. Look on all the foums as I think someone also had a dfx.

I put over three years on a couple different DFX's and have had an Omega for a year. There's no doubt in my mind which of the two I prefer.

I have the omega but never the DFX . I love the omega and it works great at the beach except near the water where there is a lot of black sand. You would have to lower your sensitivity in that area.

In fact, found my first gold ring this past weekend at the beach with my omega and 11" dd coil.

about being too over the top with my repeated and consistent praise of the new Teks. Sorry Marta..I guess I assumed it was obvious.

In my old age I sometimes miss things. Sorry.I still use my Red Mark I. Just wish it was not so heavy.

Jimmy:
I've also been using the DFX for years and love
it (especially the tone ID) nothings like it.
I hunt mostly with the 5.3 inch or 8 inch
excellerator coil which lightens the weight some.
I mostly always had a mm Tesoro for backup.
Now have the Omega and just got the 11 DD coil
and it still feels like it is a micro max.
This set-up makes me not miss my DFX when I
take it out like my previous back-ups. The
back-up may become my front runner.
Regards
Percy

I dont have a DFX, but have used Tesoro (several), Minelab (four), Bounty Hunter (three) and Fisher (all non-water detectors) and still use some of them. I have had my Omega for just on one month now. First time out I found a small silver coin which had to have been in the ground for more than 40 years (went out of circulation no later than 196:geek: and since then I have used both the 10" concentric coil and the 11" DD coil. Both are very good, but with the DD I am pulling coins from depths that some of my other detectors haven't reached sufficiently well for me to attempt extraction of the target. One area is a place I cant dig, but have to use a probe. I was using a 6" probe and had to get a longer one as it was not reaching the targets. I cant compare the DFX and the Omega, but I can say the Omega is light, well balanced, user friendly and goes deep. I like it.

percy, i like my dfx for the same reasons, plus i mostly hunt for gold rings , listening for that sweet round sound. i wonder how the omega will do on iding gold. i know it a lower fq. than the 15khs of the dfx, but would thank it would still give the good round sound.

Jimmy, I just found my first gold ring this past weekend with my omega and it rang up as foil and nickel. It fluctuated back and forth but it sounded ok. Since this was my first one, I have nothing to compare it to. I was using 3 tones.

What kind of depth are we talking about? Just curious ! I have a F5 but want to upgrade to the Omega. I know the F5 maxes out at 8 inches on a dime or penny around 10 on quarters.

In Georgia clay I am getting more than that. Can't say exactly because I don't actually measure depth when digging. I just dig. I have found coins with the Omega in areas my sovereign did not find.
