Question Machine comparison

I have a chance to buy a Goldscan at a very reasonable price. At the moment I have a Minelab Sovereign (15 WOT) & Explorer.I fancy trying a PI, will this machine have any advantages in depth or sensiivity to gold on the beach, over my present machines.

The Goldscan is a older Eric Foster design, and I am not familiar enough with it to give a intelligent answer. Perhaps Eric will jump in and add to it.
If it

I don't know about the Goldscan but I have a Goldquest SS with 11" coil and I also have a soverign XS2A-Pro with a S-12 Intruder coil on it. I did a test Friday with the two. I put a 2 gram 14k gold ring 7 inches in the wet sand. The Sovereign with the Intruder coil wouldn't pick it up. My CZ-20 wouldn't as well. Sunday I took the same ring and burried it 8 inches and still got a good signal with the GQ. A friend took his Explorer with X-12 Intruder coil and on occasion he got a beep but if he was swinging the coil he would have missed it. I will do another test and put the ring 10" in the wet sand and I'm sure the Goldquest SS will pick it up because at 8" it had a good signal. I will post my test when finished.

Thanks for all the replies, certainly somethings to think about.Look forward to the results of the rest of your tests. The gldscan is such reasonable price I think it got to be worth a go.
cheers again !

Hi Swansea Jack,
The Goldscan is a bit dated now, except that it has ground balancing, if required. The current machines have higher sensitivity to small gold, but the Goldscan can still hold its own on medium and higher carat rings. It was a very popular beach machine ten year ago. I still have a good stock of spares, so servicing is not a problem. Also do a mod to convert it to motion mode, if needed.
Eric.

Hi Swansea Jack,
I still have a Goldscan (GS), which, like Eric mentioned, is outdated in some aspects. The ground balance works quite well which is a feature that made this detector unique in its day. Even by today's standards, it will hold its own.
The GQ is much more sensitive to small gold and is certainly lighter. The audio differences are considerable also. The Goldscan has an audio that is a putt-putt nature. It works fine, but is different than a typical output from today's detectors. That will take some getting used to.
If you are planning on using it for extended periods of time, I also recommend some form of a suspension system to minimize the weight. The detector isn't overly heavy since the battery is separate, but it is awkward enough that using it for extended periods of time could get tiring.
If you decide to get the detector, I strongly recommend the mod Eric mentioned. This mod will eliminate the need for retuning the detector on a regular basis.
As for my GS, it is destined for some more mods, hopefully in the near future.
