Question on coil size

My garrett mark II with the 8.5 coil is a little niosy when a wave goes over the coil.I recently got the larger coil and it is no longer a little more noisy it has a higher pitch noise. So it is harder to hear deeppper targets. Is this normal? Thanks for any info,Joe

Hi Joe,
Do you mean that the larger coil gives more wave noise than the 8.5in one? If so, this is normal. Larger coils see a bigger volume of water and their transmitted field extends further. Usually with bigger coils the delay has to be retarded a bit more to reduce wave noise, at the expense of small object sensitivity.
Eric.

I'am going to try the discrete mode that Philst says will solve the wave problem. The machine will run more smooth but I'am afraid of loosing depth.I emailed him to get his knowledge on the discrete mode.According to the owners manual there is no lose of performance. The manual says air testing in discrete is very poor but is better in the field. The few times I went to discrete I could run the machine on 1 or lower instead of 2 in standard mode.Standard mode seems to give a wider feild but is harder to hear the deep targets.During summer here in Florida we have alot of soft sand move in close to the shore line so target go deep quick.I use a Excalibur for most of my hunting but I know a PI will go a little deepper.I have found a few quarters 20 inches deep where my Excal. gets them about 17 inches. The little more depth will help but it is hard to hear them in standar mode.I wish there was a 2d coil like the Infinium for the Mark II.I think it would work good in the Discrete mode.Thank you,Joe
