Question on Excalibur coil covers...

thinkin2

New member
How many of you use them? I just got my Excalibur and it seems hard to keep the coil cover on the thing. I'm thinking it isn't worth the effort and sure as anything I'll lose it soon as I get in the water. Other than this little gripe I really like the Excal. Do any of you have a way of keeping them on or do you just prefer to not bother? Thanks.
Jerry

EPOXY THE COIL ITSELF

SOME HAVE USED SPRAY ON BEDLINER FOR THEIR COILS............NEVER TRIED IT, BUT SOUNDS OK

TAKE A LOOK - WORKS GREAT..........TWO COATS AND RECOAT EVERY SUMMER

hi grave digger, i lost a cover off my x-12 last year. looks like a good idea but how thick do you do you recomend and whats the name of that stuff.

Looks like a good way. In the meantime, until warranty expires, maybe I'll try a small piece of double sided tape. The thing just doesn't want to stay on, even on the beach, and I know I'll lose it in the water. Thanks again and have a good one.

Hey guys, here's a simple way to keep your coil cover from coming off if your having a problem keeping them on. Get a package of 4" nylon cable ties from Walmart or your hardware store and wrap a couple around your coil. Snug them up tight and cut off any loose ends. When you want to clean the sand out of your coil cover just cut the cable ties and replace again. I use this method on my machines and it works great. Hope it helps!

Hey Thinkin2, I have a friend of mine, that uses Electrical Tape to hold his on. Then he takes it off either after each outting, or after a couple of outtings, because sand/saltwater will get inside the coil cover, and will cause some falsing. This is cheaper than wireties, but you have to decide what FLOATS YOUR BOAT!!
GravediggerMax has an excellent method, but like he says, use this method ONLY AFTER WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED!! Great Post MAX!! Very informative. HH

Today I used a couple of strips of first aid tape. Worked great and doesn't leave the residue of electrical tape. Really funny you should post this. Great minds think alike, lol. BTW, I know this is off topic but when were you there? Have a great weekend.

Hey Jerry, I was In-Country from June 1971 through the end of March 1972. I spent most of my tour in I-Corp PhuBai and Hue City, and then with Vietnamesation of the war, I spent my last couple of weeks in II-Corps Nha Trang. Also, I was a combat M.P. (Military Police) with 18th M.P. Brigade. Were you in country? If so, who were you with? HH

No, I wasn't in country. I was Navy, on a destroyer up off of I corps from '67-'68. Left just before the '68 Tet offensive. We provided gunfire support to ground forces up there and sometimes went up north on Operation Sea Dragon to interdict men and supplies coming down the coastal waterways. Funny, everyone has heard of the Ho Chi Minh Trail but not many people know that they did the same thing along the coastal waterways. These were the only times we came under fire, from NVA coastal artillery. Things were pretty cozy for us compared to you guys. Glad you made it back and hope things are good for you. Thanks for your service.

hey digger, looks good . now did you epoxy the coil cover on or did you take it off. how fast does it set up? can i take my time putting the epoxy on.

heres how i got over the coil cover problem lads, i removed the coil cover, degreased both the cover and coil, masked up what i wanted to keep clean, then using a windscreen mastic gun i filled the inside of the cover . then using g clamps i pressed out the air and excess mastic, wiped off the sticky mess, demasked it and left it for 2 days in the warm to cure, That solved my problem regards tony weston (England)

Hey Jerry, First off, let me say, "WELCOME HOME"! You may not have touched Vietnamese Soil, but you were off the coast, and therefore "In
Theatre". That makes you a Vietnam Vet as far as I am concerned. Also, you stated that you had it alot better than me, that is probably so. But, I had it alot better than the Special Forces/Rangers/and the regular Infantry, not to mention alot of MARINES! Somebody always has it better than someone else, and being off the coast on a destroyer was the natural part of the U.S. Navy's Mission in Southeast Asia. But, NAVY SEALS/NAVY CORPSMAN don't have it easy or better, BY ANY MEANS!! By any chance were you on the USS
New Jersey? I have a first cousin that was on the New Jersey. Take care "My Brother". HH

Welcome home yourself. No, I got back before the New Jersey went over. I was on the USS Waldron, DD-699, an old WWII destroyer that had three gun turrets with twin 5" 38 guns on each turret. That's why we were used mostly for gunfire support missions. We provided support for elements of the 1st CAV Airmobile, 3rd Marine Amphibious Force, and some units of ROK Marines and some ARVN forces. It got interesting sometimes and I know those guys were in some bad situations. I really felt for them and hope that what we did at least in some way contributed to getting them through some tough times. We were usually sitting about four miles or so off the beach so sometimes we had a pretty good view of some of the things going on if they were close to the beach, especially the air support. The F-4 Phantoms were pretty awesome to watch when they made bombing runs on the coast. Not to turn this into an off topic thread, and I won't post anymore about this here, but I'm getting deja-vu with what is going on in Iraq. I sure hope it doesn't turn into another Nam. God bless you, my brother and stay in touch through PM's once in awhile. Hope you're having a great weekend and finding some good stuff.
