question on silver dollars

Goes4ever

New member
ok I was told in stock coin program it will not detect a silver dollar, is this true? If so how can I adjust it to accept them? HIGHLY unlikely I will ever get my coil over one, but if I am lucky enough to, I surely want the etrac to accept it. Can someone explain how to do it?

Hi Goes.

I think you just push the QuickMask button and make sure the screen is all white...:poke:

Ok. Other may chime in but you'll at least need to "whiten up" 43 and 44 Cond. numbers on the 01 Ferrous Line (clear at the top). I've never had the experience of finding the big silver dollar either, but this is just what I've read.

So to do this I think you:

1. Press Menu button
2. Go to Discrimination
3. Select EDIT
4. Use arrows (the four on the bottom left) to get your "smallest cursor" to move to 01-43
5. Press checkmark/X button (very bottom right) to "whiten" it
6. Move one more spot over and press checkmark/X button to "whiten 01-44
7. Press Detect button
8. Load Smartfind? YES (right arrow of the four)
9. Press Discrimination button
10. Select Save and store it where you want

I think this should do it.

If you find a SilverCartwheel tomorrow with it, just PM and I'll send you my address where you can ship it to me.

I don't have a silver dollar to test with Goes4Ever but I have altered my pattern also. There is some speculation that the factory (coin) pattern is designed for UK users and they don't have any coins that "hit" there. It has also been my experience that when sensitivity is too high there is falsing in this range due to EMI, so by having these coordinates rejected, falsing is slightly reduced when running "hot". Also, Large Iron that would read 35 Fe in all metal, "jumps" through the disc pattern and reads 1 Fe and that is why it has been disced out in factory setting, So the Iron will "null" like it should instead of chattering. A push of a button (quickmask) usually reveals it for what it is...Iron.

Like you, I would rather investigate the occasional strong Iron signal and determine for myself to dig or not. If it means I dig the occasional deep iron so be it...Ok so there's two ways I know of to alter your pattern to accept different objects, specifically the American silver dollars.

Tip: If you are editing your pattern indoors, turn your sens all the way down in manual.

The factory coins program pattern has a rejected line in the top right of the screen, presumably this is where silver dollars hit. To make certain you are not missing any of these low ferrous/high conductors follow these steps...press the menu button, go to the discrimination tab and scroll down to the edit function. Select with the right or left arrow key. Now you have the edit pattern screen. You will notice a column of squares on the left. This column determines how many pixels of discrimination you would like to edit at a time. For this particular pattern edit you can select any of the top three using the arrow key under the power key. (the bottom square is full screen edit)

Also, notice the column on the right. You will want to select the top edit function which allows you to manually move the cursor. The area to be accepted is
fe - 1, co - 43 thru fe - 1, co - 50. Use the arrow pad to position the cursor over these coordinates and press the accept/reject button to remove the "line" of discrimination (very bottom right button with the X and checkmark)

Another way to do it, would be to get a silver dollar and scan it from all different directions in learn mode. (if done with other coins you will want to use a "Big" edit square to allow for fluctuations) edit discrimination screen, highlight the third box down on the right column and highlight the second or third box in the column on the left. As you pass the coin over the coil it will automatically "open" the portion of discrimination where it "hits". be sure to pass the coin from different heights, angles, etc.. Be sure your sens is all the way at one so there is no falsing which will cause the screen to "open" up all over the place in learn mode.

I just put my brand new E Trac together yesterday and I happen to have a Morgan buried in my test garden at 9". I turned the detector on, hit noise cancel and I went to the garden for some schooling on the E's sounds. I can tell you for a fact that my E Trac screams when I run the coil over the Morgan in the factory Minelab coins mode just the way that it came from the dealer. I too had read the same thing as you and was concerned about it, but for no reason with my machine.

Hi Goes,
Neb Trac tells it how it is to open up the area IF it is blackened out (rejected). I would suggest that you buy or barrow some coins to try under your coil...I also spent some time on the Emulator and reading Andy's book while waiting for my E trac to come to me, so I knew the story of the rejected dollars on the E before I went out. I also have lots of time on older explorers (shovel-head) and have gone by sounds (not disc) for quite a few years (the cursor comes in second to the sound) Andy's book ( I think) is the easiest way to learn how to manipulate your E. But I am kind of weird that way I like to change around the settings and functions even on the same site depending on how It is reacting. I have to admit the two Dollars I found the first time out with my E were completely a surprise to me as I liked the high solid tone but had dug lots of iron object's that day that would hit 1 31-38. They pretty much came in at 1 43-44 but the sound made me curious so I dug it up.
My suggestion...get in a good spot where a lost dollar could be. They are so big that they werent lost too easy, right? So try to find a place that fits the coin being lost and your chances will be better.
I found one Silver Piece Dollar in an old Chair once. (Pure LUCK again!)

best of luck to you,

I have coins to test, just never tried silver dollar yet, will do that, I have Andy's book, have read that, I have had emulator for a month before I even got the etrac, I do hunt by sound, not numbers. I have had coins come in at some odd numbers but they sounded good so I dug them. I have had indians come in at 01-31, just never know. And all the places I hunt are old homesteads, that is why I thought someday I might run my coil over one.

Hi again Goes,
One thing that you probably know is that the deeper the coin is the less accurate the Id is going to be, Just like you said aboue that the indian Head came in at 01 31. I will do some testing on the dollar at 10-12 inches with the stock coil and try to give you a few numbers for a deep buried one. I hope you do find a hidden stash one day!

good luck
