Question on the Explorer SE

Silver crazy

New member
How is the Explorer SE on coin hunting and how is the depth on coins? Also how good is it in trash with the 11 inch coil?. I have always used Fisher CZ's and I have found coins 8 to 9 inches but doesn't get real good trash seperation. Thanks

i'd like to invite you to take a good hard look at the finds posted on this forum...

others may disagree but the results speak for themselves:
the E-Trac is the only serious competition for the Explorers :minelab:

I used CZs for years (since 1996)... thought I was the bees knees. Then I watched a guy pull a seated dime and shield nickel, right in front of me, out of a "hunted out" park with an Explorer. It was then I knew I had to have one. I was finding 10-20 silver coins per year with the CZ.

First year with the Explorer... 50 silver coins, 2 gold rings. This year with Explorer and E-Trac, 178 silver coins, one gold ring. I firmly believe that anything the E-Trac will hit, the Explorer SE Pro will get as well. Either machine is excellent. I prefer the E-Trac interface to the Explorer, but that's just my preference. I've said before that if you are a coinshooter, you will probably prefer the E-Trac. If you're more of a relic hunter, you may prefer the Explorer.

It's not about the depth... I'm not digging deeper stuff, it's the DD coil and the balls-on ID capability that make the Minelabs deadly. You hear that high pitched tone, it's silver! Con't get me wrong though, these machines go plenty deep too. I've found myself digging deeper than I would like many times!

The Pro coil is awesome in trash. No detector is great in super heavy trash, but almost all my coins are coming from hunted out parks and schools using the Pro coil.

To me, there is no bigger testimonial to the Minelab than the 1833 dime I dug this weekend in a heavily hunted old park. I've even been at several group and club hunts at this park over the years, and anyone who gets a detector tries their hand here. I usually stay away as it is trashy and the finds are few and far between. You'd be lucky to get a wheat cent many days.

If you are serious about old silver coins, Explorer or E-Trac are the way to go. Admittedly, there is a learning curve, and it ain't a cinchy turn-on-and-go like the CZ, but if you put the time in to learn it, it's worth it.

I always used cz's for beach hunting but now use an explorer SE and have been doing some land hunting now.
You won't be disappointed if you put the time in on learning the explorer.

A nicely tuned CZ is probably as deep as any machine ever made including the explorers.
The explorers will see many more deep coins masked by the iron though.

If you are a clad hunter... buy anything you want because they arent down there too deep. BUT.... if you are looking for old silver or copper i just dont think you can beat the explorers. If you keep your coil low you shouldnt have any trouble hitting 9 or 10" coins and thats no fish story. I think that most people switch just because of the amount of silver they see us post... its pretty darn impressive. These machines really give a very distinct tone to silver and deep copper. On the other hand some of us are trying to master those lower tones that gold gives... thats been a lot more difficult. A bit puzzleing since minelab is the premir gold machines.

What dewcon said....and he said it very well:thumbup:

I was also a diehard cz user for years. I wish I knew how many sweet deep coin signals I dug only to find a small rusty nail. You wont have that problem with the explorer.

Don't try to convince a CZ user the ML is deeper, theres already enough competition for the deep silver.

i've used the cz-5, soveriegn, and trying to learn the explorer xs. i dug a lot of old coins with the sovereign i missed with the cz-5 and some with the explorer that the sovereign missed. i believe i have dug more rusty nails that sounded good with the sov. and explorer than i did with the cz
