question on the sunray probe on the e-trac

Hi all, I am still debating if I want to spend the money on a probe or not. I have a question on the sunray probe. I was told by the dealer that I bought my detector from that it is not waterproof and if it is raining or going to rain you should not take it out. I know the e-trac is not waterproof but, with the cover on it it is at least moister resistant so if you do get stuck out in the rain. Just wondering if this will cause problems or can you buy a cover for the sunray? Has anybody ever had a problem with this before? Thanks all and HH.

I've never had a problem with my probe in light rain. If it's down pouring, I don't hunt anyways.

I think ruining your probe via water would be really low on the worry list (it's not something I would even think about). One thing to worry about on the probes is the way you treat them. I hunted many hours with my machine and have used my probes thousands of times in the turf over the last 3 years. I've gone through two different Sunray probes. Both probes failed right where the cable goes into the probe. You need to be very careful not to yank on your probe cable, or try "digging" with your probe. Try to reduce probe cable twists, and do not tighten the strain reliefs on the probe cable. Even though my probes needed repair, I still wouldn't hunt without them.....they are a very integral park of my hunting/recovering style. They add a little extra weight to your machine, so it might take a little getting used to at first.

I've taken my detector out in some pretty nasty situations and had no problems. (knock on wood) I do not recommend going out in inclimate weather but sometimes that is the price you pay for the opportunity to detect. I try to cover the cpu on the etrac as well as the probe with plastic bags. DO NOT put the coil up in the air. I also recommend it best not to be out when it is too wet because the mud factor. That stuff just gets everywhere. And it transfers real easily from your hands after you retrieve a target. Just keep some plastic in your pocket if it looks iffy out there and you should be fine. O and by the way, that sunray probe is worth every penny. I would be totally lost without it. Hope this helps.

No it's not waterproof, but I have used mine when its drizzling out many times over the years without any adverse effects. It just comes down to common sense. I don't know of any covers that are made for it, but I'm sure a small plastic bag would work for the control box. That being said, it will be one of the best purchases you can buy for your ETrac.

The very first line on the Basic Operation sheet that comes with the X-1 Probes states "Note: The X-1 Target Probe is waterproof and submersible. However, the X-1 switch box is only water resistant and should be protected if hunting in rain or wet conditions.

Someone did make a cover for the switch box but I have not been able to find it online but it would be very easy to just use a ziploc type bag and a little tape to make a cover.
