Question on using GB ??

I usually only use my TDI when I hunt at DIV where the ground is hot. But here in Alabama, I don't have hot ground and was wondering should I turn Ground Balance off if its not needed? Thanks for any help. Craig

Hi Craig,

There is no reason to use the GB if the detector will work with the GB turned off. In fact, you will gain depth on all targets with the GB off. What you will not be able to do is easily tell much about the targets. All objects will generate a high tone regardless of the conductivity.

Now, is this a bad thing? Not really. Many beach hunters use a PI that has no ground balance and with experience can tell many objects simply by the other characteristics of the signal.

So, in answer to your question, yes, feel free to turn the GB off, especially if you want to gain more depth.

Here is a link to some testing a person did with a TDI. It gives a person some idea of what to expect but should only be used as a general reference. What this link does show is how the GB can affect the depth of different targets.

What is noted is the greatest depth occurs with the GB off. It also shows how a considerable amount of depth can be lost under the right conditions.
