question re. 'semi-automatic sensitivity'

auto....464 Silvers? I guess that's working for you VERY WELL & I wouldn't change anything either...you must have some REALLY good sites to hunt. I have no idea where you hunt but what Chris was saying is that the explorer seems to detune in trashy areas to the point that it's hard to get over 6-7 inches...at least that is what it appears my SE is doing...Now if I go someplace where there is little trash I can run in semi & don't seem to lose any depth at all. I should mention that when I'm hunting this trashy park, I can't seem to zero in on anything deep anyway, simply because of the amount of crap in the ground. The unit is not falseing either, becaue they are repeatable signals...I've got a small coil on the way & I'm thinking that will help...I have to agree that air tests have little value, & the only time I do them is to get an idea of the sound & digital read I'm gonna get off them...keep pulling that silver..HH....TT

have been hunted extremely hard. One of the first things Ralph at Sunray told me was if I was having trouble with the probe was to go to semi auto. I had trouble with the plastic on my first explorer and when I sent it to Mine lab to be fixed I had the opportunity to talk at great length with Dick Schultz. He did say that you could drive your car across town in 1st gear wide open and get the same result as putting it in drive and covering the same distance. That is the same as the settings for sensitivity and sweep speed. I cover ground behind other hunters and find targets that they miss. At one of our club hunts I had another member check a signal because he wanted to know what I was digging. he said that it was not anything worth digging and that I was mistaken. It was an Indian head at 11 inches. I called it before I dug it and it was what I said it was. Know you machine, be open minded and listen to suggestions.

I am open minded & listen to all suggestions...I'm REALLY new to the Explorer (SE) & I'll be learning for a long time. If you are getting those kind of results, it is obviously working for you & like I said, I wouldn't change a thing...However I'm gonna have to stand my ground on this one because for ME in THIS park, I CANNOT pick up any decent DEPTH by running in SEMI-AUTO...maybe it's my machine, maybe it's the ground, & maybe it's me OR maybe a combination of both, along with my inexperience with this new detector...I don't know...but one thing I CAN tell you with certainty is that by running in semi, in this particular park, I miss a lot of targets because they simply vanish...I carry a small plastic marker that I use to mark spots where I think my target is located. On my last trip to this park, I located several "PROBABLE" deep good targets & marked them. When I would back off I would switch back to semi-auto & make another approach...It should have been easier to re-locate the target because the spot was obvious on the ground...guess what?? I couldn't regain the target in semi...switch back & it's there again...the ONLY conclusion I can come up with is that I can't run in Semi-auto in this park...it doesn't work...if you have a suggestion that MAY help, by all means let me know what it is & I will try it...I would love nothing more than to be able to pull that much silver out of the ground...HH...TT

...expertise! Since my initial post and reading all the comments, I have been running the SE on 'Manual' sens. I can generally do that at 21-24, with little or no 'noise' (as long as I sweep slowly and remember to 'noise cancel' first!). Today at a saltwater beach, I actually ran it at 32/manual! Boy, was it going deep! (E.g., an Indian at 8+ inches, gave a solid signal.)
I also re-tried 32/auto...just didn't sound right - meaning I was NOT picking up the usual occasional 'blips', as in manual. Just a steady, unchanging hum. No more. // I am loving the SE.
