Question reading response from school.........

I asked permission to MD at a local University (Marshall University), I called the campus police and asked if I could search their grounds. Their response, was "Yes you can but you can't dig up the grass" !!!! Now, should I take this response as a "NO" or use a screwdriver to probe the targets ? or just go ahead and MD as usual and wait til someone tells me to leave ?

You are so lucky to get permission at such a place. Use a screwdriver, take all the garbage with you, return (if possible) valuables and don't dig any holes.

Plan to bring PP, will probably go out Sunday morning when few people are around.

If they say yes, I'd go during the low activity hours and carefully probe up some targets starting in spots that are less taken care of landscape wise. This kind of gets the feel on the reaction campus cops and such. Be sure not to take along any intrusive looking digging tools and don't leave a trail behind showing someone has been digging/probing targets. Always pouch up your trash. Wave and/or say hi to any campus cops when they spot you. After awhile you can/should be able to determine their reactions and if any conversations take place, they should be able to determine somewhat on how you detect. If all goes well I'd work my way to better looking spots.
My wife told me once don't drink booze, smoke the cigarette pieces found, flick the cigarette butts towards folks, and display the butt crack while digging because you don't know if the reactions will get you removed or folks will think your homeless and toss change at ya..... I thought on the part "toss change at ya"

A slit is not a hole either. You can easily recover coins down to 3 inches without disturbing the lawn. It takes practice, though. Make sure your technique is good before you start there, IOW, practice. Did I mention you need to practice?

That said. If asked to leave, just go, or at least have the name of the authority that gave you permission to be there. Security guards can be bribed with soda, beer, or coffeee. Just imagine how shitty it is to deal with college kids.

Bet you find a mess of keepers and if you're careful I bet nobody ever says boo to you.

Chris

Sounds like a loaded answer to me up for interpretation to whichever security officer is on duty. I'd obtain written permission first in case the folks who told you yes are not the ones who may stop you later and ask what you're doing, and possiblly get you in trouble with the law.

Went to Marshall University this evening for about an hour. Though I'd check for any presence of campus cops. It appears that I'm not the only person that been MD. Went to a high traffic area and didn't dig anything worth talking about. I can usually tell by whats in the ground if its worth anymore effort......and it appears that its been hunted before me pretty hard. Oh well..........next:
