Question REf. the Quatro

New member
I had an Explorer a couple of years back, so I am basically familiar with the Quatro. My question pertains to the bar graph. If you are hunting in the all metal mode will the bar graph indicate two different targets if they both are detected at the same time, such as a nail and a coin? I am currently using a DFX and the signagraph will indicate two different targets if they are detected at the same time. I am thinking about trying a Quatro because I think it may work better in trash than the DFX. The Explorer I had worked very well in trash. HH

No, it will only display one target at a time.

Like the Explorer, the Quattro has two audio modes....Ferrous and Conductive. While you were in Ferrous mode, you would definitely get the tones...the lower tone would point out the trash and the higher tone would ferret out the goodie. Of course, you could always ensure that the trash is disc'd out and only hear the good tone :)

If you're interested in the Quattro, I HIGHLY recommend the book "Mastering The Minelab Quattro" by Andy Sabish. You can find a copy on Ebay or the usual forums for a good price. I can't say enough good things about the book :)

Hello.....as with most target ID machines, I believe the more successful users, give much more weight to listening to the quality and pitch of the audio tones, and apply less weight to the graphic display. I for one, believe that one should get used to detecting in a blind (audio priority) mode until you KNOW what the machine is telling you, and then use the graphic display as confirmation. No matter the fanciness of the display, this is still a tone and pitch, and amplitude hobby. Good luck and Good hunting.

I have both the Quattro and the DFX. The Quattro will struggle a little more in trashy areas and I would stick with the DFX for trashy areas. The smaller coil with the Quattro is not too bad. The standard coil for the DFX is concentric whereas the Quattro is DD. Concentric coils are better in trash(also the smaller the better).
I'm not a big fan of hunting in all metal mode as you get a lot of noise. At least in my area seems like there is always iorn.

Hello Chuck, I agree with you 100% that you need to listen carefully to the pitch and tone, and learn what the detector is telling you. I almost always work 'blind' especially when you're dealing with very trashy and highly mineralized ground. The ID screen isn't always reliable in that, there's such a diversity of relics, it's impossible for ANY detector to read everything. Hence, good listening and focusing on signals and sounds is the key.
Mirage, I have to say, I think you may be missing out on some targets if you are detecting in trashy ground and not using all metal mode. The noise does take a little getting use to, and with patience you can overcome this. I wouldn't detect any other way, on the goldfields or the beach. I know for a certainty that I'm finding targets that could otherwise have been missing using other modes, due to the masking. If I were you, I wouldn't give up just yet on all metal.
Cheers Angela:)
