Question regarding Pulse Delay ???

Mega

New member
I recently bought a new Pulse machine just before Christmas but only recently started to use it in the last few days although i have been detecting with various top flight VLF machines for years this Pulse technology is all new to me and i have grasped most of what the various control do but i cannot grasp what the Pulse Delay does or how to use it or what its for, before i go any further the machine in question is a Crossbow PI custom built by someone from the UK and has years of building these machines but in the handbook it suggests using the lowest setting 1st this is untill you get use to it then you can alter the settings to your type of detecting.

So my detecting will be 100% hoard hunting over here in the UK on pasture and farm land and no beach detecting as i live about 70 miles from the nearest beach,on most forums the figure that is mainly used for Delay is anywhere between 10-25 uS what ever that means its totally over my head but i guess it must be the ultra fast time that is used like a speedo on a car or something like that,so most people suggest 10uS for gold on beaches and 25uS for hoards and large items so have i got this right if so what would people suggest that i use say a mid way setting and why do they have this feature and what exactly does it do.If anyone can help but please 'note' this is all new technology for me so if you could use laymans language so that i can understand what you are talking about

This may seem like stupid question to most of you but i have grasped what most of the controls do but not this Delay function, just one more question am i right in saying that once most of the controls are set you only need to fine tweak a few of the setting like the threshold, pulse delay etc then thats it or do most of you alter the settings through out the day as i am trying to tame this beast but unless i understand what some of the functions do i will end up just twiddling knobs for no reason.

Regards

Mega

A search on "pulse delay" on this forum will give you all you need to know.

Tony.

Since you asked........
That's exactly what he has one of 12 Crossbow Classic PI's built.
The detector was designed with 10.5" diameter search coil, and is set up to maximize depth and sensitivity for coins and rings, and for hoard hunting.
It was not designed to find very small fine jewelery. Reports show it is getting some impressive depths in the UK.

Hi,yes that is exactly the same one as mine, its taken me a little time to get use to it but all i can say is what a machine it will be mainly set up as a hoard hunter and a bigger coil is on order, its very Deeeeeeeeeeep i doubt it will ever get used on the beach as i am so far inland but may take it down and give it a try sometime this year.Hope to take it out for a full days dig this sunday on pasture land.

I forgot to mention that my original question has been answered, and at last i have fully grasped how a Pulse works and what the various controls do so very happy,it will be mountewd on a Whites TDI Pro straight shaft as i hate the horrible 'S' shaft that it came with.

@ dr.jare do you own one or just did a Google search ???

I just did a Google search... I think the delay on your detector of 25uS and up (does not have a delay of 10uS)... so you do not have much to worry about that function.

@ dr.jare, just checked and the range is 20us to 50us so that should be better suited to my hoard hunting.

Hi Mega B, where distance is detected 1 euro and how to detect a can of Coke, in the air, with standard coil 10.5", with minimal delay ?

I am due to take the Crossbow out tomorrow,so will try and get some indication on those 2 items, but i have to admit i am one that not usally posts depth claims on forums as i have seen it so many times people say he is making these claims up or its impossible to get that depth from that detector,so that is why i usually mention it deep enough for me or my needs.

But as a general rule of thumb a Pulse machine will go deeper than a VLF machine with the same size coil and we will leave it at that,i have to admit i am so pleased with mine as its my 1st Pulse machine its like going back to school again to learn how it works but i like a challenge and yesterday i decided to use solely this detector for the next few months on all my digs and permission but i will take my T2 as a backup and because of this i will learn much quicker i guess it will be like throwing someone in the deep end at the local swimming pool

Well today was going to be the 1st big test for the Crossbow Pulse after i have spent about a week trying it out on my test garden to find the best setting and its tuned for coins and bigger artifacts and i have the Delay set at about 3-4 o'clock on the dial and have to admit it runs rock solid,as i am not detecting gold nuggets so i dont need it on the minimum delay and as a result it does knock out alot of the small stuff that i dont want like very small foil but it will still hit our silver hammered coins with ease.

The only reason of not being able to get out is the rain,as farmers wont allow you on the fields as it will churn them all up and anyway i cannot see the fun in detecting in the rain,if the weather is better during the week we may well re-schedule the dig again for next weekend.

Hi Mega B, how I heard in England often raining (winter and flying)... can you to try the test at room... I think the can of cola and and 1 euro coin... If your detector is not bothered by wet soil, should not bother him either test in the room (of course the TV and PC is off).
Best regards.
