Question?????

What is the best disc setting for the T2 and Omega 8000 I know on the LTD it is 6 mono tone.

On the Omega 16 and monotone is supposed to be best for unmasking in Iron. I forget what Nasa Tom posted for the T2, but I think it was either 21 or 23 in mono.

Yeah for unmasking in iron, it was 21 on the T2 from memory.

For me, with both me T2 and Omega I take the same approach as I have with other top-performing models I have used for decades and that is really dependant upon the site I am hunting, the patience I have at the time, the density and type of annoying trash, etc..

You simply asked:

The answer is quite dependant upon the individuals desire to knock out certain trash and how well they can tolerate hearing some junk, as well as what they are after. In short, there really is no "best disc. setting" that works for everyone.

Most often, and I mean most of the time but not always, I don't mind hearing ALL targets at a site because knowing that iron can easily mask a desired find, I like to know that iron is present. That way I can work the coil around probable iron junk and listen for any subtle good-target hit. So I generally have my T2 Discrimination set at '0' and my Omega runs at a minimum setting of '1'. I set my Audio Tone ID for 2+ on the T2 and d2 on the Omega for most open-ground searches because it provides me with better depth and target resolution overall, and alerts me to probable iron trash.

If I am working a site that is rather open, such as a farm field or in the woods, etc., and I am looking for ANY sign of past human activity, then I might be hunting a rather clean area. If the site is large and relatively clean or free of any targets, then it doesn't matter that I am hunting with all metal acceptance because nothing is there to annoy me.

Should I be looking for any past sign of humans then I want to be alert for any and all metal objects, including iron, so I WANT to listen for any signal from iron. Then, once the site is located, I can slow down and work it more patiently, still audibly identifying iron and non-iron (usually), and if the targets are densely spaced I switch to a smaller coil. Even with the 5" DD mounted, I seldom alter my discriminate settings.

Now, having stated that, do I ever use a different Tone ID setting or vary my Discrimination setting? Yes, to both questions:

If I am working an urban site that typically generates primarily modern coins, such as tot-lots, or maybe hunting a well manicured private yard and I am only after the most probable coin-type targets, then I will often use d4 Tones on the Omega. I seldom work such sites with the T2. Also, I leave the Discrimination at a setting of '1' on the Omega.

Sometimes I work a site where I know iron is present, mainly in the form of nails (typically iron) and in great abundance. For example, I know of one old church site and two old ghost towns school sites that are loaded with iron nails. Far more than even I want to have to deal with hearing and, in those cases, I use only enough Discrimination to reject those common iron nails. That would usually be about 20-21 on the T2 and 16-17 on the Omega.

Are there any other exception to the above for me? Maybe once in a while, when I know a site and it's free of iron and I am looking for particularly smaller and or deeper targets with the T2, I have run at a Discriminate setting of '50', still in the 2+ Audio ID, simply because there is a marginal increase in sensitivity (responsiveness or depth) that is present.

So, there are my answers, but an average coin hunter might operate them where ALL iron is knocked out, or some might use a lot of notch discrimination. It really isn't anything than can be described as "best" for everyone, just "best" for you.

I don't mean to hijack this thread too much but just wanted to spread some thanks:

Monte: in the few weeks I have been visiting this forum your posts have stood out the most -- I have been consistently amazed at the detail and value of the information you provide. Thank you for the time and effort you provide everyone!

Lowboy: I want to thank you as well for your great videos on youtube, they are very enjoyable and inspirational. Do you ever get down to SoCal? I'm just starting out with detecting and am slowly building the experience necessary to make the "great finds". Your videos prove that research is key and they give me hope :)

Best,
