Hi to all; just joined this site, total newbe to detecting, have friends that have two and three makes of machines, all highly ranked for there uses (gold/ relics/coins) plan to buy a a mid $ range tector, but have an offer to get a freedom ace plus for all most free, would like advise on its use and how to start out with it, also what type of head phones to buy? I thought this would be something to play with till I get a up to date model. what do you think? boy there sure is alot to read through on this forum, but really enjoy it THANKS!!

I think Leslie from Nova Scotia uses that detector.
He does very well with it.

The Freedom is still a good mchine and used by many. At the price you quote - GRAB IT! I probably have a field test on that one that I can post or send to you. Will have to hunt it up.

I used one for some time. It bangs hard on coins, get good depth and is a no frills turn on and go machine. A perfect beginner and regular use detector. I found lots of coins with mine. 
- - Jump on it! If you dont like it or outgrow it or whatever - you can make some money selling it.
And it always makes a nice backup, while adding bragging rights.
But the Freedom series were nice in their day... meaning they are as nice today as ever. Run, do not walk to snag it.

Yeah, I still have mine. I won first place in a competition speed hunt with it. Here's a litlle tip if you get it. Set the second disc control to where the pulltabs just break up-goes deeper on silver and hits high coins harder. If you are not wanting to use the notch, you just turn the second one off-or turn it all the way to the left. The Ace beats the crap out of it and it uses less battery power to do it- the Energizer bunny was actually installed as standard equipment in the Ace.
Sorry, I may have over-exaggerated about the Ace, but I kinda like the puke-yellow thing.
Sorry, I may have over-exaggerated about the Ace, but I kinda like the puke-yellow thing.Hi to all you swingers; went and got that freedom ace plus, now have a sore arm. all ready found lots of nails and other junk in my yard, this thing seems to go pretty deep, even found a electric line going to my storage shed. was wanting to find a manual for it ,(if still possible) and are there other types of coils that will work on it? if so what are they designed to find? now I'am really going to shop for a newer and stronger model, just have to decide which one? do alot of gold prospecting, so maybe a multi use type would be best?THANKS for all the replys, great to have people who are sharing there knowledge and help for everyone. all and any suggestions will be watched to get up to speed on this unit and others. Yes, the Garrett Crossfire II line of coils will work. There are large and small ones. The larger ones are for deeper targets in clean areas and the small ones for finding targets among trash, in congested sites.
...now I'am really going to shop for a newer and stronger model, just have to decide which one? do alot of gold prospecting, so maybe a multi use type would be best?
Garrett Gold Stinger, then. A classic, multi-use gold detector if ever there was one.
