Questions for Eric

I have some PI coil questions. First, how critical is the initial alignment of DD coils, how critical to maintain that alignment, and is
Faraday shielding necessary on PI coils? If shielding is recommended, is the use of conductive paint a common method, or is some form of wraping commonly used?
Thank you,
Reg

Hi Reg,
If the DD coil is for a PI, then the alignment is not critical as the receive function doesn't take place until after the transmitter is off. Hence, for the operation of the detector an electrical balance is not really necessary. Where it is useful, is that a DD coil gives much less signal from mineralised ground. For any real sensitivity, a Faraday shield is a must, otherwise false signals will result from capacitive effects with the ground. A paint shield is good, fine pitch ribbon cable is better as is 0.1mm lead tape.
Eric.

Thanks Eric. You are a wealth of knowledge and it is refreshing to have somebody like you who is so knowledgeable in the detector field who is willing to share that technical knowledge. If you don't mind I will mention you and this website in my column in Lost Treasure magazine.
Thanks again,
Reg
