Questions For You Computer Geeks

Being that I have limited knowledge on operating programs, I have a question for those of you more experienced than myself. Presently my laptop runs Windows Vista Home Premium. I have a CD to install Ubuntu on my hard drive. What would be the advantage or disadvantage to doing so???

If it were me, I would get a extra Notebook Hardrive..2.5..{size}.Less 80 dollars best buy. Pull the Vista drive and install the New drive, install the Linux Based operating system on your new drive, that way you can play with the new system and see if you like it. If you don't Like it, put the Vista drive Back IN. The extra drive can be a backup drive if you have problems with the vista or YOU Can just install vista or Xp over the UB OS...Always good to have a back Up. Good Luck...Obn

Why not just reformat to XP? It works, unlike my daughter's Vista system. What an embarrassment for micro-squish.

Of course, if you are really into pain and want to use Linux, you are braver than I.....

I have Ubuntu cd as well. Started to put it on my laptop a while back..think it ran off the cd but my laptop at the time had a messed up monitor screen so could not see the top of the screen...where all the icons seemed to be. I uninstalled it. Tried to do it again now that I have a new screen in place but now seems it wants to install to the hard drive and I was worried about overwriting the XP operating system so canceled the install. I do have another laptop I can put Ubuntu onto but first it needs a memory board replacement as it never shows the same size memory each time it is started up.

Have always been interested in Linux. I once had a version of Linux on a desktop...wasn't Red Hat but another version that I can no longer find.

Sherry has another 'toy' that uses a version of Linux called Maemo...doesn't run on PCs just internet tablets. It is kinda like the Palm hand helds programs. I am amazed at the things her little toy can do.

So guess I am babbling. May never run Ubuntu but am looking more into the Maemo. Good luck.

They all bring pluses and minuses. Are you dissatisfied with your current OS? I've used older linux systems and didnt care for them so much, but everyone likes something different. Oldbeechnut's suggestion sounds a little expensive, but doable, in that it would be a great way to try it out.

XP Service Pack 2 is pretty much bug free these days, especially if you use Firefox (or other as your browser).

I'm inclined to go along with the XP2 suggestion. I've used it in the past and didn't have any problems with it. Granted ~ it wasn't the Mac OS but it worked rather well for MS. Unbunto is about as close as I'm likely to come to an OS that mimics Apple and, for the most part, is unlikely to be hacked. Of course Linux is from Unbunto as is Firefox and they all seem to work rather well. There's a lot of software available today for the Linux OS (Ubunto) that wasn't available a few short years ago. I think there's a good possibility that Linux is going to give MS a run for their money. Speaking of which, have you all heard that MS OS7 is be coming onto the market by this fall? I talked to a young geek that just moved back to Michigan (layed off by MS) from the west coast and he says that OS7 is worse than Vista and he highly recomended either going with XP2 or buy a Mac. So, if I'm to continue using a MS based system, Linux (Ubunto) is looking better and better. What's your thoughts?
