questions on headphone Tones.

I Always get good information and answers here so I'm back with a question on headphones.
My Sov/GT came with a pair of cheapies that I immediately bagged and replaced with another set I had. Then I found an old pair of stereo headphones, each side individually controlled for volume, and plenty loud. The other advantage they have is an extremely long coiled cord. This I like because they never get pulled off. The tones are good.
I recently forgot my headphones and had to go with the built in speaker. That I never do. But the tones from the speaker seemed to me to be really good. The tones are rounder and fuller than those produced by any headphones I have used. I can only compare the speaker tones to SOV audio samples I got off Jim Vokes website. Probably one and the same. But those tones are good.
So the question is - Are the SOV electronic tones generally better reproduced on the built in speaker than tones transmitted to any headphones? I know most go with headphones, as do I, but is that mainly for other reasons? To me the SOV tones are the thing and I want to have them reproduced throughout their full range.

That is a tough question being we don't know the brand of your headphones. In my use of different headphones I have seen where some don't seem reproduce a good tone variance of some others. I had a cheap pair when I started with my first Sovereign and switched to the Gray Ghost originals and seen where the tone were much better and could tell the different tones. I went to the Timberwolfs next as I had to see how they would work and for me with my bad hearing these were louder.I felt I could tell the tones even better and even seen where I could tell the difference in the zinc penny and the copper penny many times without looking at the meter. Now for my Sovereigns i use the Timberwolfs and know some brand may have a tone that will work better for them, but to me the Timberwolfs sound the same as the speaker tones do.

My headphones approximate what comes out of the Sov speaker.

I just tested 4 headphones:

Sony MDR-V6
AKG K240
Audio 200 (KellyCo Cheapie)
Ipod ear buds

The best sound was from the Sonys, but no vol control and the Sov BOOMS out of them. The AKGs were the worst, but thats probably because they're 600 ohm! The Audio 200s weren't as nice as the Sonys but they weren't so bad either. The ipod were ok, but not much low end.

All but the AKG sound "quite like" the speaker.

Why I haven't upgraded from the Audio 200s to a nicer pair for MD I don't know. They are SO uncomfortable and ill fitting compared to my Sonys.

I too have the Gray Ghost and find they reproduce the sound nicely.
