I purchased mono headset with 1/4" adaptor designed for hamn and cb radios and they don't work with my classic III. Anyone know why?

You need STEREO headphones...mono has inputs in the wrong places on the plug...
or you need a Mono to Stereo adapter plug if such a thing exists...

Radio Shack sells a mono to stereo adapter plug that will work.

HUmmmmmmm. I bought two pair of Raido Shacks head phones. They come with an adapter.
I wonder which set you bought? Mine work perfectly.

I have a Spectrum that has a mono plug jack. Most detectors today use a stereo jack.

I have found over the years that a good set of Stereo Sony Studio Standard MDR V600 headphones are by far better than any other headphone for metal detecting. I've tried them all and the Sony V600 is the headphones that have more than doubled my finds. They run about a hundred bucks.

The Frequency response is 5hZ to 30KHZ and offers very sharp audio that allows to pickup sounds that are missed by cheaper headphones. You will have to turn down the volume because the audio is just so crisp. And don't forget the comfort factor. I can wear these headphones all day and not get that sore ear tired head feeling.

The good thing about them is that you can get a stereo to mono adapter and allows them to be used on any detector.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a good set of headphones. They will more than pay for themselves.
