Rain had set in last night and the 24 hour forecast didn't look good for digging today. About 8a with no rain falling I checked the hourly forecast and it showed 0 % chance of rain until after lunch. So, I believed it and headed off to a spot with my LTD in tow. I had told CCH last night that I used the small 6 1/2" coil on occasion, (he had dug his recent La Pelican button using the 6 1//2) so I put it on this morning planning on hunting the trashier edges and not venturing to far from my vehicle. I started off swinging just as I entered the woods off a trail and right off got a nice high tone and readings in the upper 70's and promptly popped a well traveled 1904 Barber dime. Snapped a picture and felt the first rain drop. Threw a baggie over the screen as it began to rain harder and headed for my Freestyle. Within ten minutes the shower was over, but I was already headed home. Yep, I am in favor of a water proof new Fisher, too. Now, will wait and see what the afternoon brings. HH jim tn

I saw that rain hitting you fellows on the radar. We are still getting snow, ice rain and cold, not supposed to be above 30 until Friday if then...I might get out this afternoon, the big Lake is flat as glass, which seldom happens.

Hunting in the rain very well can be the best time of the entire year to hunt certain locations! Theres nobody out, you have entire parks and schools, totlots, beaches all to yourself!
It helps keep a fellow from getting overheated, keeps a body hydrated too, generally easy digging and nice hard signals...a person can hunt ALL day in a nice rain event....if he's got the gear that is up to it. If not, then its a day gone by waiting on the weather. Just sayin'

May 15th for walleye opener in MN this year? I remember when we lived up there I of course ice fished, had a manual drill spoon blade thing, if a guy kept it sharp, it did a nice job...anyway, one winter a few years after Mt St Helens blew up I think..early 80's? it was 50 below for a very long time, I was right down on the ice with the crank before breaking through..thats pretty much all of 4' of ice. I also remember falling through the ice several times a year on beaver ponds, that year being no exception, so in spots its 4' and right off to the side by the cattails its less than an inch in some places. We wore mittens nearly year round, gloves were of no use...I bet McDave can tell some stories, he's nearly up to the Canadian border. Boy, walleye opener on Leech Lake sure is a blast, and I look forward to when you go up there, you always find some nice silver between fishing!

My cousin and I ice fished and speared out of a two hole ice house when I lived up there and I remember some 36" ice. Auger extensions are needed on Lake of the Woods and probably other area lakes this year. I go to Big Sand in the Park Rapids area, beautiful lake and not far from Leach. HH im tn
My dad has a second home up on Lake Vermillion near Cook, MN. He's about 45 minutes south of the Canadian border,and they've had some May ice outs, and seen ice in the bays in June. LOL
