Eat the rats, so they can't eat the maters! :) I hear they taste like chicken!

He was an elderly gent ( has since gone to God's arms) who lived his last years in a wheelchair in home bound. He was a very respected hunter and gardener "in his day", so my friend and I bought some tomato plants and planted them in his yard outside a window where he could watch them grow..

We would visit him almost every day...and as we entered the house and after the usually "Goodmorning" we always asked "How are the tomtoes growing"?
He would smile.. a big smile and give up the "thumbs up"..

.but one day ...sadly he said "No more tomatoes.......I saw the deer come on to the property and they ate them all"....My friend and I went out to check and I couldn't believe what I was seeing!......gone...right down to the bottom of the stems....all 20 plants!!

Sooooooooooo we went and bought him one of those little tomato trees for the inside of the house...and brought back his smile.

I miss him ..he had lots of interesting stories to tell us about his days of hunting and trapping way up in the state of Maine

we started camping in the summer. We put in 100 matter plants a year. Had a stand and sold them at the road. Every day I'd carry a 5 gal pail full to sell.
Funny thing is I dont like matters
YUCK!!

Hey, Bill, was it a mama or papa rat? Sorry about your maters and hope you get some good ones that have not been eaten on! Birds peck holes and animals will eat on them.....apparently they like those maters, also! Only way you can solve it is to put up netting or build you a screen house and plant your maters in there for protection and then the tomato worms would probably get them, soooo just grin and bare it!

God Bless!
