rats VS pro golds

Would like to hear from folks who own, or have owned BOTH the pro golds and ratphones. Your thoughts on both good, bad, whatever. Did you chose one over the other....and why. I know there are many good others, but would like to keep the thread focused on just these two. Thanks , Dan

I have both and also have a mxt pro and a Tesoro Tejon the Rats seem to sound better on the tejon then the mxt. and the gold's are best with the mxt it may be the mxt is a set volume. both are just great. in sound and made.

I spoke to a SunRay dealer on the phone today and he told me that the pro golds are made by killer bee's and are wasps in a different wrapper. He said they are the same except for a different sized/shape ear cup. he sells both and didn't try to push me one way or the other. any thoughts on that?

I am looking for a new set of phones. I currently own Rats and really like them. They are starting to wear-out. Money is no concern as long as I feel I am getting my moneys worth. From all of what I have read, it seem that the pro golds are top of the heap. The PG's are the direction I am headed. The reason I am hesitating is that the only other set of high end MD'ing phones that I have tried were the ultimate Grey ghosts. I didn't like them at all compared to the ratphones. To me, they sounded "tinny". I don't know how else to describe it. They didn't have the "clean" crisp sounds that I was familiar with.

One of the main things that has me very interested in the PG's is, Etrac owners say they compliment this detector. One thing that I have noticed is that unplugged, my Etrac has slightly higher, "flutier" sounds on silver type targets. My rats give a clear high quality, high tone, but slightly lower on the scale whithout that true fluty signal. I am just trying to figure out .......will I get that same high flute without it being "tinny" with the PG's.

I'm just trying to save my-self from doing things twice. thanks for all your help- Dan

I am in the market for a new set of phones myself and leaning toward the Pro Golds. The only thing now that I am concerned about is the posts on the SunRay Forum about the leather ear cup covers cracking shortly after they were purchased.

SunRay Pro Golds
Grey Ghost Ultimates
Black Widows
Killer Bee's................All seem to be favored head phones.

I do not find the tones to be tinny but know of a very good E-Tracer who is used to lower pitched phones and did not like the pro golds for that reason. If you shop around on price you should be able to get most of your money back from resale if the Pro Golds do not suit your ears.....

Dan, I have owned both and both are great phones. I have had my Rats for 5 years and I hunt 700 plus hours a year. No problems. The Sunrays have slightly better audio, but they have a smaller cup size. The Rats are a full sized cup and if you have bigger ears, they are more comfortable. Also, the Ratphones I have are the older style, not the blue or white ones. The blue and white phones were the last that Rick Viola had on the market. To my knowledge, Detect America is out of the detecting headphone business. I got the last set of leather replacement earcups a year ago. If I could find a new set of the older style Ratphones I would buy them. R.L.

My Rats are about 5 years old too. On one side were the muff is attatched to the head band is broke ( sorta fixed it) and the ear pads are all cracked, but don't seem to bother me. They are still very usable. I want to get a back-up or new primary just in case my rats go down in the middle of the season. It looks like the pro golds will be the ones. thanks for all your input.

Don't know about the Rats but my Sun Ray's sound great.
Other than I had to send them back three times WTF
Twice for a short in the cord once in the ear muff.
I know what people are thinking but I am very careful
and never over-stretch the cord or throw them around.
Might be just a fluke but I can't recommend them
because of my personal experience.
Yes they were always fixed for almost free (shipping)

Rick decides to build some more.

My Pro golds were the best phones I ever used with My Whites but when I switched to Minelab I switched to a set of Grey Ghost as I like them even better. They have upheld better, sturdy, sound better with all the tonal quality and the only complaint I might make is that I wish they were more comfortable after 8 hours of use. But then agian I have not had any that have met that wish.

I would like to give the Rat a try but the Ghost is working to well for me to worry it.

good luck
