Just curious as to how the e trac knows the ground balance. You dont have to ground balance so is this something that is preset or is it tracking but you just dont know it?

Hey Magic, I think I read somewhere, there is a separate frequency set aside to just track the ground. The way I remember it was, the unit has three groups of multiple frequencies going out to detect and 1 additional frequency to track the ground. Correct me anyone if I'm not getting that quite right, but I think I recalled reading that.

Based on what I can find, the E-Trac ground balances automatically and continually tracks and adjusts for changes. If you have a copy of Andy Sabisch's "The Minelab Explorer & E-Trac Handbook", he talks about it on page 11 indicating the FBS technology allows the detector to "ignore" the ground effects rather than "compensate" for it. Likewise, if reading technical white papers doesn't put you to sleep, check out the Technical Notes page of the Minelab web site (it is in the Consumer section under Knowledge Base). This page has some articles that talk about Minelab's approach regarding ground balance and tracking.

Lastly, if you are not hunting on a white sand beach, you'll typically want to leave the Ground setting at the factory preset of Difficult. The instruction manual covers this pretty well on page 74.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers!
