When hunting with my somewhat outdated GTAx 1000 but new to me, I occasionally get a fair to good audio signal, but no visual ID shows up on the screen..... nada, zip, nothing. So, what are the chances of these being worth digging?

I also use a GTA 1000 and have for many years. Don't sell this old timer short, mine will bang a quarter as deep as my newer 1500 and the 1000/5.5" hot-head coil combo is the deepest-seeking small coil detector combo I have tried yet (I have the 4.5" x-fire and scorcher coils for my 1000 and 1500 and the 5.5 blows them away).
Normally, even deeper coins will give a visual display, even though it may jump around in the mid-to-low conductivity range. Sometimes you need to pass your coil over the target several times to get the signal to 'lock in' on an accurate visual display. Even an intermittant or one-way belltone is worth digging, especially if it meters deep.
Provided that your detector is functioning correctly, I would ignore the signals that don't yield a visual display of any kind... you might try digging a few to satisfy your curiosity, but they are most likely ground mineralization or haloed iron.
On those 'iffy' signals I like to move some dirt off of the target and try again. Good targets will generally read stronger and iron will often read weaker as the dirt is removed.

Skillet,thanks much. As you have described it is what I have been thinking. Did dig a few and found a dry hole. Signal didn't get any louder with dirt removed and usually disappeared. By the way,does the 5.5 hot head fit all GTAx 1000's? Mine was manufactured in 2001. Mary at Garrett did say I would need to have the coil plug changed on their 4.5 Crossfire to fit my 1000.

Maybe this is what she meant? The connectors are referred to as "standard" and "barrel"... mine is the standard type. The Kellyco cat. illustrates the difference. The newer machines use the barrel type.

experience on your 1000 ,would replacing my 4.5 with the 5.5 be the way to go. Or would it be better to get it in addition. I love how the 4.5 does a final clean up for me after using the larger coils to cover the area first. What do you think of the new 1350 by the way. That's a good question because both coils have strengths/weakness'...
The 5.5 wins in the depth dept., bettering the smaller coil on most coins by 1-2". With larger gold rings the increase is even more impressive. The HH will bang my class ring 10" out in the air, and would likely pick it up nearly 7" deep in good ground.
A minus for the 5.5 is that it is just slightly less stable, and will belltone on deep iron more often than the 4.5... I still can generally run both coils at max sens.
Plus for the 4.5 is better target seperation in my dime/pulltab/distance test; 2.5" compared to 4" or about 31% better, pinpointing is also slightly better, making this my coil of choice for searching around public swimming pool where I use only a screwdriver to retrieve targets in order to avoid big holes and make sure that I'm not asked to never come back again!
Personally, the 5.5 stays on the 1000 99% of the time. It's an impressive little coil. I use my 1500 when I want to search clean ground and keep the 1000 on hand for trashy sites.
I would keep and use both coils if I were you, the 5.5" was on sale @ Kellyco for around 70 bucks and well worth it. Resale for your 4.5 won't be too high either and targ. sep. with this coil is awesome on the GTA, it beats the same size coil on my 1500 in both target seperation and depth for most coins, though the 1500/4.5 is hotter on gold.
Sorry for rambling... these are my observations on Garretts and small coils... hope this helps!
